We’re pretty sure you already know what this is, given that you haven’t been in hiding under a rock for the last week. It’s the ALS #IceBucketChallenge!
We didn’t know too much about ALS before this crazy week of videos, but now that we do, we think you should too. ALS is an incurable and progressive neurodegenerative disease that eventually leads to total muscle paralysis.
Meet Pete Frates, creator of the challenge and a screen snap of the very first Ice Bucket Challenge Nomination.
Pete was diagnosed with ALS in 2012 and today he is experiencing full symptoms of the disease. Just two years later, Pete has almost totally lost the use of his arms, legs and voice.
With a cute sense of humor playing “Ice Ice Baby” in the background, Pete thought up and nominated himself for a challenge he physically couldn’t complete and then challenged his friends and family to do what he could not in the name of raising awareness for this terrible affliction. The rest is viral social media history.
According to the ALS Association, HALF of the U.S. didn’t know what the disease is. With everyone from Martha Stewart to Jimmy Fallon having done the challenge (in addition to your best friend, brother and 3rd grade teacher) we’re pretty sure the other half of America has caught on.
This time last year, donations to the ALS Association were just $22,000. This year in the same time frame, donations have been in the MILLIONS! We think that’s a number worth a few minutes of intensely uncomfortable goose bumps.
Our girls Zeda Navarro, Alena Zubakina, Sakura Heffron, Cat Haave, Wase Chief, Alexis Ren, Jocelyn Coe, Polina Frantsena, Allison Holton, Tylynn Nguyen, Cynthia Kirchner, Katy Kilcourse, Diane Murtha, Fo Porter, and the Ellis Sisters completed the challenge in their effort to #StrikeoutALS. Watch all of their full videos on our YouTube channel.
We also want to take this opportunity to show our support to a member of the Nous family who has been affected by ALS. We don’t want to single you out, but you know who you are. We love and support you!
Here are some fun behind the scenes photos of the girls:
This was all good fun for a good cause, but sometimes actions really do speak louder than words. We’ll be pledging a donation for every view of our Ice Bucket Challenge Video! We invite you to step up to the challenge and donate here!
