Being in LA, where a beach day is a good idea all year-round, we’re big fans of braided up-dos. Salty, wind-swept hair after a long beach day? No problem; hide the mess in a messy braid and transition from day to night without breaking out your arsenal of hair products and tools. This is no secret to us Angelenos. But this year, the beach babe’s go-to braided, tangled, messy updo is officially NYFW-approved!
Donna Karan’s Spring/Summer 2015 beauty statement was definitely a new concept. People are calling it the ‘hair lanyard’. Hold up: does this mean we can actually use those finely-honed knotting skills we learned back in summer camp for something other than a plastic keychain? ..Yes!? We dig it.
On the same day, 3.1 Philip Lim displayed his first NYFW up-do ever. Meet: the flyaway, knotted bun.
One of our favorite hair stylists, Cantrell Mitchell showed us how to get our own version of the trending messy braids and buns in just a few short steps with Maggimae using 4 standard french braids pinned together into a bun. Watch the vid to get the look:

It’s a hot, hot summer and the struggle is real to keep a girl’s hair looking fresh. Hair Stylist Cantrell Mitchell teams up with our model Maggimae (@maggimae_) to show us a refreshing take on the braid trend to beat the summer heat. Check out the tutorial video below!
Easy, gorgeous, and so chic! Here’s a closer look at the final product:
NOUSzine went to Makeup School at Make Up For Ever to learn a thing or two from the pros. We made our way to Make Up For Ever on Robertson Blvd to watch as head makeup artist, Talia Cich, gave Monica and Brianna the perfect looks for spring and summer. Bright eyes and bold lips, oh my!
Talia went for a colorful look for Brianna which included a nude shadow, teal liner and a bold orange lip. Products from the Make Up For EverAqua Collection were used to create this look.
For Monica, Talia went with winged liner and bright berry lip. Watch as Talia translates this season’s beauty trend to a look perfect for day to night.
Coachella Music Festival is right around the corner and everyone wants to know what to wear. While many are unable to seek tips from a pro, NOUSzine went straight to the source and covered Coachella style from day to night. LF Robertson’s in-house style expert, Ashley, shared with us on how to take your look from day to night without losing your sense of personal style. Watch as she shares how she styled our girls, Phoenix and Kym in four great outfits. You can’t lose with these tips!
For day, Ashley chose a flirty flower girl look for Kym. Flowers galore but roughed up with a pair of amazing military style boots by Steve Madden.
“One of the main trends, going on is the crochet; inside the shredding we have the crotchet exposed. Another must have for Coachella is the cropped tops, right here we have the Mullal floral top. Perfectly fits her, super comfy with the elastic band on the back. Another big trend going forward is the floral headdress. We’ve got the Steve Madden Troopa boots and to add a little bit girly flair we put the ruffled socks with it just to make it a little bit girly but rough it up for the desert. Also we have the Rebbeca Minkoff new spring 2013 cross body bag has the studs going down the side so a little bit of edge but still very girly.”
Phoenix’s rocked a bohemian inspired look, including a lace bustier to the aztec print.
“We have the paper heart soft shorts with the little fringe details. You’re going to see a lot of soft shorts going forward going into the spring/summer season with the aztec print. We have the bohemian headdress, the Rebecca Minkoff bag, super cute that can hold just about anything you need for Coachella. down here we have the M.I.A. gladiator sandals, super cute, they also come in white which is really great. We just like this whole look together, it’s very cohesive with the bohemian style, perfect for Coachella no matter how hot it gets she’s going to stay nice and cute and cool.”
Kym can’t be missed partying on the field in a neon green beanie, bleached ACDC tee and distressed denim.
“So night one outfit that Kym’s got on is very edgy rocker-chic. We have the ‘Furst of a Kind’ bleached out vintage tee. We spend a lot of time remaking the vintage tees. You cannot find these anywhere except LF. Down below we have the Report Ackley boot. You’re going to see a ton of exposed boots, lots of buckles going forward. Another perfect choice for Coachella, that way your feet don’t get too ruffed up out in the desert. We have the neon beanie going on so you can’t get lost at night, your friends will be able to find you.”
Phoenix kept her bohemian inspired look going through the night in a dress with aztec print and Steven Madden Thunda boots.
“Phoenix night time outfit for Coachella consists of this really cute angel diva dress, you’ve got the aztec print going down the front so you can still carry that bohemian sense of style throughout the night. We have this really awesome Carmar denim jacket, a bunch of distressing to kind of rough it up, edge it up just a little bit but the dress still keeps it very girly.”
