Alyssa Miller

Looking for a new look to rock this summer? Well, we have just the solution! This past week our girl, Alyssa Miller, launched her modern take on western-wear, collaborating with Understated Leather. We couldn’t be more in love with the results and knew we just had to share it with all of you! For those that want to learn more about her collaboration, we have good news. Upon the launch, Alyssa sat down with  W Magazine, offering all the exclusive deets on her new line. View the full interview below!:

W Magazine: How did this partnership with Understated Leather come to life?

AM: Jen, who owns and operates Understated Leather, and I became close friends and just started chatting about it casually and eventually decided to collaborate. It’s been a dream to work with my bestie on my first collection.

W Magazine: What was your inspiration for the collection?

AM: I was very inspired by Nudie and Roncelli suits, and western wear in general. I loved the idea of having a few pieces of the same collection and being able to wear them together as suit wear, throwing a jacket on with jeans, or the shorts with a classic white button up tied at the waist.

W Magazine: From music to modeling, you’re a multi-hyphenate. Did you always plan on venturing into design as well?

AM: I wear many hats, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Having been a model for so long I learned a lot about clothes, design, and style. So I think it was a matter of time before I started working on my own designs. I didn’t realize exactly how rewarding it could be to see your concepts go from mind to paper to being born into actuality. I loved the process. I imagine it will be even more so seeing all the beautiful women of the world actually wearing them.

W Magazine: Take me through the design process with the Understated Leather team. How did this collaboration work?

AM: Jen was amazing, she was very hands off and let me conceptualize the entire collection and every piece I wanted. We then worked with a designer on fit. We worked very hard to make sure that every piece was as flattering and flawless as possible. I relentlessly pushed every detail, the pants I am particularly proud of. A good suede pant is very hard to come by—I know because I’ve searched endlessly. So I’m proud to say I think we made the perfect pair.

W Magazine: The collection seems to be based around the brand’s Texan roots. Was this intentional?

AM: With both Jen and I being based out of Austin I think it was impossible to avoid. We both love and embrace western culture and are inspired by it every day out here. I wanted to find a way of meshing city wear with Texas country cowboy wear. I want to take a bit of Texas with me everywhere I go.

W Magazine: What would you say is your signature touch in the collection?

AM: The embroidery is to me, what makes this collection so special and spectacular. It reminds me of something you might find on a vintage piece. Something that if you were to find in a vintage shop you might die from excitement.

W Magazine: You also styled the campaign—what is your styling philosophy?

AM: In this case it was less is more. I used only vintage white blouses and t- shirts from my vintage collection for Pilgrim, a bit of a signature of mine. The great thing about this collection is that it really speaks for itself, it didn’t need much.

W Magazine: You took a three day road-trip to West Texas for the campaign. What was that like?

AM: I wanted it to feel like a journey, like an adventure, and it was one. We almost ran out of gas on a country road with nothing around for miles. We talked for hours, we shared our stories and offered our advice. We almost peed our pants while waiting for the next rest stop, then ate all the crappy convenience store snacks and drank wine straight from the bottle at night. We shot when we came upon something interesting that helped tell our story. We shot when it felt right, and when it didn’t, we didn’t. It was perfect.

W Magazine: Do you feel your friendship helped shape this collection?

AM: My friendships shape everything I do, but this one in particular especially. Jen offered me a safe place to design my first collection and Harper offered me a safe and open collaboration in image making as well. Having been in the industry for so long I know how hard that is to come by. To be able to speak freely about what it is I want and need to convey and to have Harper be so receptive was truly a gift. Capturing an exact mood, a feeling, is incredibly hard to do and I would never have been able to do it with out them.

W Magazine: Who are your style icons?

AM: Bianca and Mick Jagger, Françoise Hardy, Pattie Boyd… too many to count.

After seeing Free People’s latest collection, it was hard to decide which we loved more– the gorgeous intimates or Alyssa Miller’s stunning photography. Electric Love is a series of romantic and whimsical shifts, bodysuits, and vintage bra and panty sets sure to satisfy the most discerning bohemian girl, just in time for Valentine’s day. We’re over the moon over the Breaking Hearts bodysuit seen on Alyssa below, with metallic detailing and lace panelling that can be dressed up or down. Our new fave lounging outfit is sure to be the Gigi Robe thrown over their Frame Up soft bra and some Flirty Shorts for the perfect cute & comfy ensemble. Alyssa used self-portraiture to capture all of the collection’s photos, relying only on her own perspective. You can get an in-depth look at her self-portrait process, her artistic story, and how she approaches self-love in an interview with Joanna Rentz for Free People’s blog (BLDG 25), here.  Keep scrolling to see how Alyssa wears and photographs Free People!

You might know Alyssa Miller as the girl who rose to supermodel fame through modeling for Guess, Victoria’s Secret, and SI Swimsuit Edition, but at heart, she is a laid-back country girl who loves to ride horses. Boho fashion powerhouse For Love and Lemons recently teamed up with Alyssa to get an inside look at her life in Texas, where she works on writing music and taking life at a new, slower pace.  In addition to modeling, Alyssa did all the styling and photography in the shots below. We’ll be watching closely to see where her creativity takes her, and as she records her first album we expect it will be amazing new places! Days Off with: Alyssa Miller

If you’re like us, you’re welcoming Fall with open arms. And what better way to kick off the season than by exploring Austin, Texas with model, musician and animal lover Alyssa Miller. An Austin resident for just over a year, Alyssa gives us a glimpse into her surreal new life, away from LA and NY, the bustling cities she used to call home.

Read her full story to learn about her evolving career and to get a glimpse into a perfect Fall day in Austin. And let us just say – if the cooler autumn weather doesn’t give you the chills, Alyssa’s “Days Off With” story, complete with wide open ranch spaces and impromptu swims in her neighboring lake, will.

All photos were taken by Alyssa herself.

linebreakWhat does a typical day in the life of Alyssa Miller look like?

I usually wake pretty early to feed the chickens and the dogs, make my self a cup of tea, crawl back into bed and read the news/catch up on emails. I’ll play a bit of guitar, I love singing and writing songs everyday, it feeds my soul. I’m working on recording my first EP at the moment.  I try to get in a work out everyday I have off, I’ll do a spin class or Pilates. I love going for a little swim at Barton Springs after for a cool down.  I usually try to get some writing done for my Web Series I am working on with my partner Amy Bracco, called Models Wrote This. A comedic take on the everyday lives of models, stay tuned. Ultimately my perfect days off consist of a little rest and relaxation, a little productivity and creativity on some of my projects and a little activity. Perfect balance.

We see you’re an animal lover from all your furry friends you’ve featured on IG -Can you give us the name of your pets and one word to describe their personality?

My dogs:

Charlie my Boston Terrier – Gregarious

Tennessee my Mixed Breed – Lover

My chickens:

Loretta – Loud

Dolly – Sweet

Tammy – Rebellious

linebreakHow long have you lived in Texas? What made you first move to Austin and what has kept you there?

I’ve lived in Austin just over a year. I was burnt out on NY, I was pushing myself too hard with work and travel. A few friends had just bought a place in Texas so I started coming down for the weekends and just completely fell in love. I haven’t really fallen out of love either, it’s still the honeymoon phase for me. I love the people here, I love being able to just jump in the river for a quick swim anytime I want, seeing amazing live music on a whim, having chickens roam free in my yard, it’s just a higher quality of life.

We hear that you just moved into a new place – can you tell us a little bit about your new home, the aesthetic, your favorite part of the house?

It’s a bit more modern than I imagined a house of mine being, but it just had the best energy. It’s very special, so many amazing details. The space is very open and airy as well, which I love.

What are you looking for (furniture pieces, design inspiration, other decor) to decorate your new space?

I have such a love of furniture, typically Mid Century Modern, and interior design. I have collected so many amazing pieces over the years. I LOVE chairs, collect them like a mad woman. So I haven’t had to do much, but as a collector I always have my eye out for special pieces.linebreak

linebreakHow has living in Austin effected your career as a model?

To be honest, I’ve taken a major step back. But by choice, I was burnt out after years of flying non-stop and not really taking a break. Now I’m lucky enough to choose the jobs I want to take and do my own projects on the side. I’ve changed my whole approach, and my life is more about what makes me happy and keeps me healthy. Now when I am on the road, I am so happy to be there and can be fully present in the moment.

What is your favorite part of your job?

I like to think of my self as a story teller, whether that’s through modeling or through music, through my photography or through my show. Telling a story is what I love to do.linebreak

linebreakCan you give us a glimpse into what Fall is like in Austin?

Fall in Austin is amazing, it stays quite warm year round so it’s almost as if we get Fall twice, instead of Winter. The leaves turn and I get to cozy up in all my favorite sweaters, drink tea, and write, it’s my personal heaven.

On my day off, I’d wear:

An easy dress, or Jeans and a tee.

My favorite styling piece(s) for Fall are:

A good square toe ankle boot, obsessing on this shape at the moment.linebreak

linebreakOne part of your routine you couldn’t do without is:

I couldn’t do with out singing for a day, my living room has these amazing high ceilings and it makes for some nice acoustics, I just walk around singing all day long.

The song/album I’m playing on repeat this season:

Kevin Morby – Singing Sawlinebreak

linebreakWhat are some of your favorite hangouts in Austin?

Josephine House for brunch and bloody Mary’s.

Perla’s for lobster rolls.

Barton Springs for a dip and the best people watching.

The white horse for a dance, a drink, and tacos from the truck out back.

Continental club for the best live music.

In your next life you will be…?

An elephant ️<3

linebreakThe best piece of advice you have ever received and from who?

When I decided to move to Texas, I was really nervous to tell my agent, and she was so lovely and understanding. She said, “Babe, you only live once. Live it all the way up.” So simple, but it struck me because here I was after doing the same thing for so many years, afraid to take a chance and try something new. It was just the encouragement I needed, and I’ve never been happier.
