Fall

lilycover1linebreak

With tomorrow being the first official day of Fall, many of us are frantically digging our much-loved flannels and sweaters out from the back of the closet and putting away the crop tops to prepare for the coming cooler temperatures. In need of some of-the-moment inspo? Effortless fall fashion is given form in our latest NousZine exclusive shot by photographer Patrick Park and self-styled by our girl Lily, who must have taken note when Coco Chanel advised, “Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance.” This model/photographer duo created some seriously gorgeous images, which goes to show that anything can happen when creative minds come together. You might know Alyssa Miller as the girl who rose to supermodel fame through modeling for Guess, Victoria’s Secret, and SI Swimsuit Edition, but at heart, she is a laid-back country girl who loves to ride horses. Boho fashion powerhouse For Love and Lemons recently teamed up with Alyssa to get an inside look at her life in Texas, where she works on writing music and taking life at a new, slower pace.  In addition to modeling, Alyssa did all the styling and photography in the shots below. We’ll be watching closely to see where her creativity takes her, and as she records her first album we expect it will be amazing new places! Keep scrolling to experience a day in the life of Alyssa Miller.

Days Off with: Alyssa Miller

If you’re like us, you’re welcoming Fall with open arms. And what better way to kick off the season than by exploring Austin, Texas with model, musician and animal lover Alyssa Miller. An Austin resident for just over a year, Alyssa gives us a glimpse into her surreal new life, away from LA and NY, the bustling cities she used to call home.

Read her full story to learn about her evolving career and to get a glimpse into a perfect Fall day in Austin. And let us just say – if the cooler autumn weather doesn’t give you the chills, Alyssa’s “Days Off With” story, complete with wide open ranch spaces and impromptu swims in her neighboring lake, will.

All photos were taken by Alyssa herself.

linebreakWhat does a typical day in the life of Alyssa Miller look like?

I usually wake pretty early to feed the chickens and the dogs, make my self a cup of tea, crawl back into bed and read the news/catch up on emails. I’ll play a bit of guitar, I love singing and writing songs everyday, it feeds my soul. I’m working on recording my first EP at the moment.  I try to get in a work out everyday I have off, I’ll do a spin class or Pilates. I love going for a little swim at Barton Springs after for a cool down.  I usually try to get some writing done for my Web Series I am working on with my partner Amy Bracco, called Models Wrote This. A comedic take on the everyday lives of models, stay tuned. Ultimately my perfect days off consist of a little rest and relaxation, a little productivity and creativity on some of my projects and a little activity. Perfect balance.

We see you’re an animal lover from all your furry friends you’ve featured on IG -Can you give us the name of your pets and one word to describe their personality?

My dogs:

Charlie my Boston Terrier – Gregarious

Tennessee my Mixed Breed – Lover

My chickens:

Loretta – Loud

Dolly – Sweet

Tammy – Rebellious

linebreakHow long have you lived in Texas? What made you first move to Austin and what has kept you there?

I’ve lived in Austin just over a year. I was burnt out on NY, I was pushing myself too hard with work and travel. A few friends had just bought a place in Texas so I started coming down for the weekends and just completely fell in love. I haven’t really fallen out of love either, it’s still the honeymoon phase for me. I love the people here, I love being able to just jump in the river for a quick swim anytime I want, seeing amazing live music on a whim, having chickens roam free in my yard, it’s just a higher quality of life.

We hear that you just moved into a new place – can you tell us a little bit about your new home, the aesthetic, your favorite part of the house?

It’s a bit more modern than I imagined a house of mine being, but it just had the best energy. It’s very special, so many amazing details. The space is very open and airy as well, which I love.

What are you looking for (furniture pieces, design inspiration, other decor) to decorate your new space?

I have such a love of furniture, typically Mid Century Modern, and interior design. I have collected so many amazing pieces over the years. I LOVE chairs, collect them like a mad woman. So I haven’t had to do much, but as a collector I always have my eye out for special pieces.linebreak

linebreakHow has living in Austin effected your career as a model?

To be honest, I’ve taken a major step back. But by choice, I was burnt out after years of flying non-stop and not really taking a break. Now I’m lucky enough to choose the jobs I want to take and do my own projects on the side. I’ve changed my whole approach, and my life is more about what makes me happy and keeps me healthy. Now when I am on the road, I am so happy to be there and can be fully present in the moment.

What is your favorite part of your job?

I like to think of my self as a story teller, whether that’s through modeling or through music, through my photography or through my show. Telling a story is what I love to do.linebreak

linebreakCan you give us a glimpse into what Fall is like in Austin?

Fall in Austin is amazing, it stays quite warm year round so it’s almost as if we get Fall twice, instead of Winter. The leaves turn and I get to cozy up in all my favorite sweaters, drink tea, and write, it’s my personal heaven.

On my day off, I’d wear:

An easy dress, or Jeans and a tee.

My favorite styling piece(s) for Fall are:

A good square toe ankle boot, obsessing on this shape at the moment.linebreak

linebreakOne part of your routine you couldn’t do without is:

I couldn’t do with out singing for a day, my living room has these amazing high ceilings and it makes for some nice acoustics, I just walk around singing all day long.

The song/album I’m playing on repeat this season:

Kevin Morby – Singing Sawlinebreak

linebreakWhat are some of your favorite hangouts in Austin?

Josephine House for brunch and bloody Mary’s.

Perla’s for lobster rolls.

Barton Springs for a dip and the best people watching.

The white horse for a dance, a drink, and tacos from the truck out back.

Continental club for the best live music.

In your next life you will be…?

An elephant ️<3

linebreakThe best piece of advice you have ever received and from who?

When I decided to move to Texas, I was really nervous to tell my agent, and she was so lovely and understanding. She said, “Babe, you only live once. Live it all the way up.” So simple, but it struck me because here I was after doing the same thing for so many years, afraid to take a chance and try something new. It was just the encouragement I needed, and I’ve never been happier.

As summer begins to draw to a close, we look to our favorite pick-me-up here at Nous- and we’re not just talking about pumpkin spice lattes- fall collections. We’re currently captivated by 31 Bits fall lookbook starring Greta, with their bright and delicate baubles popping against classic New York chic style. Their 100% recycled jewelry is handmade and directly benefits the women who create it- taking the term ethical business to a whole new level. We can’t wait to get our hands on their urban knot necklace and the Kensington necklace– both inspired by the Big Apple’s bright lights and skyline. The holidays are filled with sugar, spice, and everything nice. But sometimes, like when it’s time to prep for those final exams, we’re not always feeling so warm and fuzzy. For the days that you just need to get up and go, rely on Rebel8: our new favorite one-stop destination for a simple, easy going style that is perfect for the hectic holiday season.

As an added cool factor, Rebel8 is one of the few brands left to rebel -pun intended- against the digital age; their threads feature original works of art, meaning many of their graphics are hand-illustrated by artists like the legendary Mike Grant. These fun graphic tees are only a taste of the casual-cool styles to choose from: between comfy denims and amazing sweatshirts, your closet will seriously be thanking you later (and so will your boyfriend, whose hoodie collection will “mysteriously” reappear).

In the brand’s new winter collection, our girl Wasé Chief perfects an “I Woke Up Like This” look that will easily transition from class to Secret Santa shopping for your BFFLs, or yourself, we’re not judging! Throw on a rad crew neck, some low-rise denims and pair with your favorite pair of Converse to make for the ultimate casual-cool look (and leave all the frill and fluff for your Christmas tree decorating). Shot by one of our favorite photographer/stylist duos – Adam Rindy and Honor Hamilton, and beauty by the lovely Jessie Bishop, the Rebel8 lookbook sums up our favorite looks for keeping it cool during the holidaze, and all year ‘round.

Winter doesn’t officially start until December 21st. Based on the incredible fall fashion out there, we’re not giving up autumn just yet. Currently, we’re taking notes from LA-based designer Living Doll who seriously knows their stuff when it comes to sweater weather. Light layers, cozy knits and fun flannels are a few of our favorite staples that make for the perfect transition from fall to winter.

Our girls Naty and Monica made us fall in love with this fabulous and affordable brand in their new look book shoot. Relax in a “Do What Makes You Happy” graphic tee on a lazy Sunday, or rock these insanely cool “Not Your Mom’s Bells” bohemian flares for a Friday night. The fun product names are just one thing we’re obsessed with about this brand; 80% of their clothing are made with love and care right here in the US of A!

So before you trade in our ponchos for parkas, see what else we’re loving from the collection.

holidayhats

From being your best friend on that not-so-great hair day to helping you achieve an “it” factor that transforms an outfit, hats are essential to any model’s wardrobe. Winter months leave us feeling frizzy and freezing, so what better way to get through the day than to cozy up under a trendy wide-brim or beanie. Here’s some of our favorite headgear to get you through the winter months with ease and (and maybe a Peppermint Mocha, or two).

Nothing screams quintessential LA style more than the black wide-brimmed hat, like the ones above from LF’s “Sincerely, Skirts” lookbook. It’s the perfect staple that will liven up your wardrobe in these dreary winter months. We love the versatility of this hat; pair it with a light-wash denim jeans and flats for a quick on-the-go day look, or dress it up in a silk frock and vintage booties for a night out. Naty models the many styles of this hat in her Brandy Melville shoot, proving that it’s the perfect fit (literally, the hat is even named Naty).

If you’re a more seasoned hat veteran and are looking to get creative, try this timeless look in olive- the edgier cousin to classic black hat. Not only is this color perfect for colder months, but it’s also extremely flattering and helps liven up our slowly-fading summer complexions. Taylor pulls off the cool girl style of this look in her Brixton hat from PacSun. Can you say, obsessed?

For a cozier alternative to the wide-brim look, we love the beanie. Wear it on the subway en route to a casting call, then stash it in your bag before heading downtown with girlfriends. Bring out your playful side with these fun cat-ear beanies from PacSun. Or throw on an embroidery beanie from Brandy Melville for an instant conversation starter (or ender, depending on your mood). Regardless, you’ll be killin’ it all through the holiday season.

From a double-page spread in Cosmopolitan Magazine to the walls of the store itself, we’ve been seeing our girl Bridget Satterlee in her newest AE campaign EVERYWHERE. November is pretty much our favorite time to shop (because with the holidays coming up we can justify going downright shop crazy), and these cozy fall outfits are to die for! Hands-down our favorite puffers, sweaters, sweatshirts and denim of the season. To be fair, AE has our favorite denim every season, but that’s beside the point.

Anyway, it simply does not get more classic than Bridget in American Eagle; that smile, that plaid- it’s a match made in fashion heaven. We’re especially loving the Neon Lemon Get Down Hooded Puffer Jacket paired with the plaid boyfriend shirt, it’s an unexpected combo but it WORKS!

Excuse us while we go buy every piece (which you totally can do too by clicking through our links at the bottom). In the meantime, feast your eyes on the beautiful Bridget Satterlee for American Eagle Outfitters.

Mason by Michelle Mason is quite possibly one of the chicest brands we know.  Perfect for layering in pretty much every way, we think you’ll find some major fall #OOTD inspo here.  Kym Ellis has been the star of their look books for a few seasons now, and we’re not surprised they keep bringing her back for more.  From street wear to evening wear, this designer line exudes a certain kind of regal confidence, and we can’t imagine a more perfect model to embody that aesthetic than Kym.

Want to know where you can shop the look?  If you’re an avid online shopper, you’ve probably crossed paths with Mason by Michelle Mason on Net-a-Porter, Revolve Clothing or The Dreslyn.  If you’re an old school and prefer a storefront where you can try on pieces to your little shopaholic heart’s desire, check out their list of stockists in 18 US states and even worldwide.
