As we move through the Holidays, it’s hard to resist downing all those yummy festive dishes. Therefore, we thought it would be only ‘fit’ to catch up with our Nous girl, Maitlyn, to find out what exercise means to her, as well as to pick her brain on her must-do fitness plans to work off those extra holiday pounds. Take a look at the questionnaire below to see what she has advised!:

1. Why do you work out?

In the beginning, it was pretty straightforward. The more physically fit I became, the more my self-confidence in my appearance grew, which in turn helped me book jobs more frequently.
But once I got into the habit of working out regularly, I realized that it was becoming therapeutic. After a long day of driving from casting to casting and sitting on the 101 or 405 for an ungodly amount of time, the gym became more of a reboot. It feels nice to park the car, lock your phone away and focus solely on yourself. A quick workout is a great way to relieve some stress. In short, the gym = my sanity.
2. At what age did you start monitoring your health?
If I’m being honest, it wasn’t until my mid-twenties. It was then that  I realized that I needed to hit the gym frequently if I wanted to keep up my ongoing love affair with food. TBH I miss my teenage metabolism… RIP.
3. In a typical week, how many times do you exercise?
I try to exercise at least 5x a week – which is a mix of instructor-led classes and at-home workouts.

Maitlyn striking a pose for Vimmia, shot by Martin Rusch.

4. Where do you typically work out?
I’m an avid ClassPass member! CP makes it easy to access gyms whenever and wherever you are. My membership lets me attend 10 classes per month for $115. I can usually be found at a Pilates reformer studio somewhere in the LA area!

Pilates Reformer

5. What do you find yourself doing the most for exercise? (lifting weights, walk, run, hike, swim, dance, aerobics, pilates, play a team sport, etc.) (you can pick more than one)

I’m going to sound like a broken record here but PILATES REFORMER. Try a class to see (and FEEL) what I’m talking about for yourself! Pilates has been the one workout I’ve found to achieve that long and lean body type, without the added bulk! I’ll also usually add in a hot yoga or hip-hop dance class each week to sweat it out (if early 00’s hip-hop comes on I’ll dance ’til I pull a muscle or embarrass myself).

Maitlyn modeling for Carbon 38.

4. What athletic brands have you worked with since joining Nous?

I’ve been lucky enough to work with a number of active brands through Nous such as Nikki Bikki, Carbon 38, Vimmia, Target, Nordstrom, Champion, and Reebok.
They’ve been great to work with and each has a unique style. It’s always fun trying to keep a calm face while holding a one-legged backbend. Also, it doesn’t hurt getting to work out on the job!
5. How do you feel at the end of the day post-exercising?
Sore and hungry. Just kidding, kinda. I always feel a sense of accomplishment post-workouts & know that I need to invest in myself in order to keep up in this industry. Exercise is crucial for both your mind & body.
6. What is the top reason that may deter you from exercising?
Brunch. I’m an easy sell to ditch the gym if my friends propose a fun brunch, which tends to happen a lot in LA…
Favorite spot: The Eveleigh (always extra bacon)

Maitlyn modeling for Carbon 38.

7. Are there any good books/videos/blogs that you would recommend to someone that is just starting out?

I’d definitely recommend home workout videos/apps for someone that’s just starting out. You can do them anytime and at your own pace without feeling self-conscious until you’re ready to get back into the gym. My go-to home workout is an 8-minute ab video from the 80’s (picture AC Slater in spandex), followed by 8-minute buns. 13 million hits can’t be wrong!
8. What was the greatest obstacle that you overcame in your workouts?
More than anything, it was not being afraid to fail. With ClassPass, you’re constantly walking into new classes with new instructors & each of them have unique methods & techniques. It can be intimidating walking into something new each day knowing that many of the participants are regulars. I have to remind myself not to compare myself to others, but sometimes if you miss a move, just copy your neighbor.

Maitlyn modeling for Carbon 38.

9. Is there anything else that you would like to include in regards to health that you feel would benefit Nous’ readers?

The number one thing and quite possibly the hardest thing to do is to not compare yourself to others! It’s only natural to have insecurities, but the most important thing to do is to focus on yourself.
It’s refreshing to see the industry and brands increasing their focus on both mental and physical health. It’s something that has been overlooked for a long time so I hope that this continues to be something that we support and celebrate.

Oh yes, Summer has finally arrived! That means it is time to purchase a tube of sun block, whip out your passport, and start globe trotting. But, before jumping into your next adventure, our Nous ladies (Megan, KJ, Camryn, and Alyena) have offered some advice that they would like to share from their recent travels.

Peep their interview below to become the jet-setting pro that you were destined to become!:

1. Hi ladies! A little birdie told me that you have recently had the opportunity to travel. Where did you travel to?

KJ in Havana, Cuba

KJ:  Hey! So after my trip to Governor’s Ball in New York with Juicy Couture, I had the impromptu decision to join my friends in Cuba, but I was only there for a total of 32 hours! I was in Havana, Cuba and we stayed at the Four Points Hotel which was a great central location for the city and beach.

Megan Martin in Bogota, Columbia

Megan: Over the past couple of years, I have been so blessed to have traveled a lot during  my modeling career.  I have been fortunate enough to book a lot of travel jobs outside of the country :).  THIS is one of my absolute favorite parts of the job.  I have been to France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Colombia, Mexico (many times), the Bahamas (many many times), & so many more.  These are just a few of my favorite & most memorable locations.

Camryn in London, England

Camryn:  I signed to Nous when I was 15, which then lead to me signing in New York City when I was 16-years-old (which I had never been) and then last year in London at (age) 17. Everything in Europe is so close, so I’ve been able to take holidays to Paris and Amsterdam. I hope to go explore more if I can.

Alyena in London, England

Alyena: Since joining Nous I have gone to London, France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany and Amsterdam! I was stoked to go to these places because it was sort of a post-High School adventure!

2. If you had to choose, which place stuck out the most?

Alyena: My favorite place so far has probably been Amsterdam because of the youth culture as well as the art scene.

Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Megan: If I haaad to choose… I would probably choose the Exumas in the Bahamas.  I was there this past May & fell in love.  I am a beach girl, & the Exumas had the most remote & beautiful beaches with the most clear & blue water I have ever seen!  I was in awe. The Exumas is made up of 365 islands.  Most are all close together so it is easy to “island hop.” It is the most serene place I have ever been.

Megan Martin in the Exumas, Bahamas.

Camryn: New York City is my favorite city in the world so far. London, Paris, and Amsterdam were so beautiful but NY will always have a special place in my heart and has inspired me to keep pushing for what I want. I’m actually moving there in August!

Press play to follow Camryn’s adventures in NYC:

KJ enjoying a day at the beach in Cuba

3. What are some of your key/favorite brands that you wore around while traveling?

KJ: While i was there (Cuba), I wore an adorable two piece skirt/top set by XIX Palms, some swim and cover up pieces by Bamba swim, and the rest was my own vintage stuff.

Alyena: Local stuff. Paris had the best fashion it was incredible! There were so many boutiques with so many different types of looks the main difficulty was trying to fit everything in my suitcase.

Alyena in Paris, France.

4. What’s something you pack that’s not absolutely essential, but you like having it?

Alyena: One thing that was essential for my trip was headphones. In long train rides and on the plane I couldn’t imagine not having them.

Camryn: I (really my mother) will pack bags of Tea and Emergen-C, so as soon as I land, I’ll be able to make my go-to drink!

Megan: A sound machine.  When traveling to a new place, you never know what your surroundings are like… & you NEED that beauty sleep.  I also use it to help me sleep & deal with time changes.

5.  Speaking of beauty sleep, what’s the best way to sleep on a plane?

Camryn: I always end up watching movies on the plane because I rarely go to the movie theater and catch up on all the new movies.. so no sleep!!

6. Was there anything that came up while you were traveling that you did not expect?

Alyena: One food I plan to never have again is veal. In Germany I got tricked into eating it because they brought out the wrong meal and it was quite a shock.

KJ sitting down for a meal in Havana, Cuba

7. Oh no! I am so sorry. Well, this brings onto our next topic: Where and/or what did you eat? Any unusual secret gems that you can’t wait to bring back home?

KJ: Our favorite restaurant to eat lunch at was called El Dandy. They had meat and cheese plates, carnitas tacos (😍😍  my fav), and the best mangos I’ve ever had! Everything there is really cheap, taxi’s were 10-20 pesos to get anywhere, and every meal was around 15 pesos a person including drinks. Both nights I was there, we ate this adorable rooftop restaurant called El Cocinero. The ambiance and food was amazing.

Megan: Bogota, Colombia has the best fried Yuca. It  is similar to french fries, but better ;).

AlyenaIf you go to Italy the one thing that I practically lived on was gelato. It’s a culture where gelato is considered acceptable with every meal!

A Spread of Italian Gelato

Megan enjoying the view in Amboise, France

8. That all sounds so good! I’m sure one of you found a familiar plate while traveling. What is one food you could now never eat in your home country again because you’ve tasted the original version in its country of origin and you’ve been forever spoiled?

Megan: Fresh pasta from Italy!

9. Now, in terms of location, did you girls get to experience/discover some local secret gems?

Camryn: If you travel to London, I’m sure you will hear of the Shoreditch House. It’s really a hip venue in a culturally rich area and they have the best roof top pool. Oh! And Brick Lane in Shoreditch has some really great thrift shops!

KJ: One night, we went to a rooftop salsa bar called Roma and it had the best vibe. I met some of the most down to earth people. On my second day in Cuba, I went to the AMAZING beach called Tarara, which is i a private beach club. It only costs 5 pesos to get in, and you feel like you’re on a deserted tropical island. Only locals really know about it so there are no people and it’s really clean. The water is super clear.

Camryn in London, England in front of the Big Ben.

10. Are there any social norms or practices you’ve encountered on your travels that you wish were more common in the USA?

Camryn: Saying English phrases like “que up” (assembling in a line) or when you are asking where bathroom is, you refer to the restroom as “the toilet.” Also, everyone says “proper” in numerous casual conversations and it is very versatile. Like, “she’s proper posh,” would be that girl is really elegant/upperclass/stylish!

11. What is the craziest/funniest thing that happened to you while traveling?

Megan: I was in Tulum shooting for a swimwear brand, and some locals approached us while shooting and proceeded to take their shirts off and get in the water & “pose” with me………..

Megan striking a pose in St. Barths wearing a swimsuit by Stone Cold Fox

12. Haha! That is hilarous. Now, has anyone done anything super creative to save money during their travels?

KJ: When traveling, always bring twice as much cash as you think you need. This is especially important in Cuba because American credit cards don’t work over there. With extra cash, if something goes wrong, you then have plenty of cushioning.

Camryn: I once took a 10 hour bus ride from Amsterdam to London because I had a job the next day and had to go home without my friends! It was actually really cool because I got to drive through Holland and Belgium.

13. Sounds like a memory for the books! So, let’s get a little personal. Do any of you ladies have an irrational fear that your travels have helped you overcome?

Megan: Traveling is such a beautiful thing. However, there is a lot of inevitable things you cannot control— like flight delays, weather, language barriers in different countries, misinterpreting cultures, & etc… You truly have to go into traveling with an open mind & ready for almost anything to happen.

KJ having some fun in the sun in Havana, Cuba

14. Love that advice! To wrap it up, does anyone have any further advice for other wanderlusters?

KJ: Knowing foreign languages is a plus, as locals may try to take advantage of you and tell you things are more money than they are. But for the most part, come with no expectations and have a great time!

Megan: Do not take traveling for granted (I sure do sometimes).  It is such a gift.  Try and be as present as possible & take any given opportunity to immerse yourself in another countries culture.

Alyena: Be a collector! One thing I try to collect in every city is a cool key chain, as well as a post card from either a museum I visited or from a street vendor.

….and that’s a wrap! Now that you’re a jet-setting pro, get inspired by checking out some more awesome photos from the girls’ past travels below:

“If you want a fuller pout, but happen to think that lip-plumping products have more of a placebo effect than anything else, don’t give up hope. Celebrity makeup artist Lauren Andersen showed us exactly how to enhance our natural lips with the strategic placement of a few key products. Grab your concealer, lip liner, lipstick, and gloss, and scroll through to see how it’s done!

Step One: Conceal
Apply concealer to the center of your lips to brighten the area, which will make them look fuller.

Go all the way to the edge of your lip line, and blend the top edges up onto your skin.

Step Two: Line
Using the lip liner of your choice, line your top and bottom lips.

The key is to apply it right on top of your natural lip line, exaggerating it ever so slightly.

Be sure to use a freshly sharpened pencil; the point will be helpful for placing the color directly on top of your natural lip line.

Feather the color in a bit at the outer corners. Don’t extend the color all the way along the bottom lip.

Leave the center bare. This makes the bottom lip look heavy and pouty.

Step Three: Lipstick
Next, blend it all together with lipstick applied with a lip brush.

Step Four: Lip Gloss
For the final volume-amplifying touch, add a light-colored gloss with a hint of shimmer,

like this Lip Glacé ($25) in Bare Naked from Laura Mercier, to just the center of your top and bottom lips.

And there you have it: a pillowy pout in just four easy steps.”

It might seem like everyone around you is coming down with a cold- so it might seem like a better idea to stay home and watch House of Cards for the rest of your life. That sounds lovely. If you figure out a way to do that, let me know. In the mean time, I have a homemade herbal remedy that will boost your immune system and help fight off germs. Behold – the Fire Cider. This tangy tincture includes garlic, horseradish, hot peppers, onions, turmeric and apple cider. All the ingredients, finely chopped and combined in a mason jar, stand and ferment for about two weeks. The strained liquid is called Fire Cider. It is one of nature’s strongest antibiotics as well as an anti-fungal and anti-viral remedy.

A couple of words about the natural properties of the ingredients:

Apple Cider – a good source of vitamin C and acetic acid. It contains mineral salts, amino acids, helps with digestion and washes out toxins. (If you read my Bone Broth recipe, you know the importance of using apple cider to draw out nutrients from other foods).

Garlic – treats high blood pressure, high cholesterol, fungal infections, and helps regulate blood sugar. It is also great for boosting the immune system.

Onion – an anti-inflammatory and beneficial to cardiovascular health.

Hot Peppers – anti irritant properties. They can help digestion, ease allergies, prevent migraines and speed up metabolism.

Ginger – reduces inflammation, stimulates circulation, and inhibits rhinovirus – which causes the common cold. It also benefits the intestinal tract and may prevent stomach ulcers.

Horseradish – has antibiotic properties, helps relieve symptoms of water retention, and treats sinus infections, urinary tract infections, and bronchitis.

Turmeric Powder – boosts immunity, helps maintain normal cholesterol levels, puts the brakes on aging, is anti-inflammatory, and has beneficial effects on arthritis, allergies, asthma and even cancer.

Now the taste of Fire Cider may at first be surprising. It has a strong kick to it and the first unsuspecting spoonful made my eyes water. Personally, I happen to love the apple cider vinegar taste and the potency makes it seem like the germs and bacteria are burning away. Start with a tablespoon a day, and slowly work your way up to a small 1 oz shot. Take once daily as a prophylactic and immune strengthening aid. Increase intake slightly if you are actually under the weather, but remember to still work your way up to the full dose. Bottoms up!!

4 cups organic apple cider (raw is better if you can find it)IMG_3401

¼ cup finely chopped garlic

½ finely chopped onion

¼ cup grated ginger

¼ cup grated horseradish

2 fresh hot peppers (habanera, or cayenne work well)

2 tbsp turmeric powder

IMG_34021. Combine and mix all ingredients (except for vinegar) in a bowl.

2. Transfer the ingredients into a Mason jar, and add apple cider vinegar.

3. Place a piece of parchment paper over the jar, before placing the lid on. This will prevent rusting.

4. Shake vigorously.

5. Place the jar in a cool place, and let stand for at least 2 weeks. Make sure to give it a good shake a few times a day.

6. After 2 weeks, strain the liquid using a metal strain.

7. Refrigerate in an airtight container. The tonic will last for up to 6 months.

Long are the days of decorating a shoebox pink and red and anxiously awaiting for it to be filled with your classmate’s (and secret crush’s) Valentines. But even though you may have outgrown those elementary school surprises, the youthful spirit of this holiday can still be incorporated into your -dare we say it- adult celebrations. After all, growing up means getting to do something much more fun and flirty anyways.

We dare you to indulge in what YOU like on the day devoted to L.O.V.E. A fanatic of books? Make a date with an indie bookshop in your town and hide away in a velvet chair reading Nicholas Sparks for hours (just don’t forget to stash a ton Kleenex in your purse). A nature girl? Grab a disposable camera and head to that new hiking trail you’ve been wanting to explore; this old-school option will give you a much needed vacation from your current iPhone camera app while adding in an element of surprise, making it that much more fun to develop later.

Whatever your choosing, this photoshoot by Ericka McConnell starring Khloe will inspire you to tap into your inner-child and fulfill all that your heart desires. Its whimsical, romantic undertones are the perfect backdrop for daydreams of love this Valentine’s Day- whether that means for yourself or a special someone. And if all else fails, that Michael Kors shoebox in your closet could make for a nice D.I.Y. project.

A select group of people in the universe- early birds, we’re looking at you- actually become excited for the morning when all is quiet and a full day ahead awaits (cue birds chirping and Pharrell’s “Happy” soundtrack). But even the most put-together gal can secretly become disheveled as soon as her alarm clock blares.

If you fall into the latter category and your daybreak routine is a bit less magical and more manic, let us be the bearers of good news: it can only get better. With a morning routine inspired by Emily Shriner in her recent shoot with editorial extraordinaire Kim Genevieve, you’ll soon find out there’s an easier way to start your morning sunny side up. Read on for our tips and tricks to start your day off on the right foot, and 8 a.m. will be looking almost as good as happy hour.

Sometimes the actual act of waking up is the hardest part. Simple fix? Let some natural light sneak through your shades when the sun rises rather than having to get up and open your current go-to double-backed blackout curtains. While you may already be relying on it as the best light to snap a selfie in, subtle natural light actually helps you rise refreshed and ready to go. If your bedroom feng shui doesn’t include a window for morning light, try investing in a dawn simulator alarm clock that relies on gradual light to wake you up – rather than the jolting buzzer of your current iPhone alarm. We’re fans.

After gracefully easing out of your beauty sleep, you’re en route to the ladies room to work on that actual beauty. Aside from being a platform for your next T. Swift rendition, the shower can also help boost productivity for the rest of the day. Some of your best thinking can be done in the shower, this we know, but visually planning out things like your #OOTD can be just as rewarding as belting out the chorus of Blank Space.

Added bonus: you won’t risk having to frantically change outfits after your breakfast magically spills all over your favorite go-to dress.

Speaking of breakfast, they don’t call it the most important meal of the day for nothing. Even just a bite or sip of the right thing can rev up your metabolism and keep you on track for the day. We’re not saying break up with your beloved Starbucks latte (but maybe we are). Cutting back on your caffeine intake to make room for real nutrients might just be a step in the right direction: too many cups of coffee actually trigger a dependence on caffeine, making you more and more dependant on it in order to wake up refreshed. Try swapping out a cup of joe for a smoothie or steaming mug of green tea in the a.m.; you (and your wallet) will likely thank us later.

The next step in your morning beauty rituals requires taming that mane. Every girl knows that when you have a good hair day, it’s pretty much guaranteed that a good day will follow. If only there was a formula (or an app) for that. Until then, we’ll make it more of a recurring pattern by investing in simple, old-school curlers, perfect for fighting frizz and breakage that too often accompanies curling irons and blow driers.

Another weapon in our arsenal is dry shampoo: the go-to tool for creating that perfectly-blow dried illusion. If you’ve used up all of your allotted non-hair wash days, there are a bunch of wet-to-dry hairstyles that you can actually pull off without looking like you’re auditioning for an Orange Is The New Black episode. We love a messy bun or a chic chignon, both of which air dry nicely into tousled waves for an “I’m born with it” effortless look.

Next up: put on your game face! What better way to wake up out of your morning slump than with a fierce lipcolor? Applying a bold red lip immediately awakens your face and elevates any outfit in a matter of seconds. Can any other product in your makeup bag accomplish that?

Adding some color to your wardrobe can also brighten up your mood for the day. While you may naturally gravitate to the black section of your closet, try and liven things up with some bold colors and fun patterns. And if you want to keep things looking polished, we love a structured jacket that serves as a 2-for-1 statement piece. Especially now that the forecast is gray, a pop of color will keep you singing long after the shower.

Before stepping out the door it might be be tempting to log onto Facebook and Instagram first thing, but save those social media feeds for your lunch hour. Says Jocelyn Glei, editor of Manage Your Day-to-Day, it’s best focus your energy on your most creative tasks at hand first thing in the morning, while our reactionary tasks (responding to your incredibly intimidating list of unread emails) should wait until later.

Getting caught in the rain, missing a new episode of Glee, not being born a Kardashian: these are things (we’d like to think) are out of our control. Something that’s not: having a camera-ready complexion.

A healthy glow may be the last thing on your mind in the cold winter months. But if you think that wintertime gives you a free pass when it comes to the clear skin department, think again! As a model knows best, you can’t hide under a hat or behind a pair of aviators when it’s time for a photoshoot on, say, the beach. And who wants to turn down a chance to spend some time behind the lens in the sand and sun?

Our girls Sydney Schafer and Sakura looked (in the words of Queen Bey) flawless in their recent tropical shoot with one of our favorite photographer duos, Melis and Dainon. Aside from having a top-notch photography team on their side, what’s their secret? It lies in the skin care!  In the interest of shopping local, all of our featured products have been selected from LA-based spa and skincare brand, Ole Henriksen.

For a girl on the go it’s important to find products that fit easily into your routine. Since we love all of you so much, we’ve decided to give you the ultimate cheat sheet to achieving enviable skin. Start now, and come spring break, you won’t even be needing an Instagram filter to look your best.

I Woke Up Like This

Starting your day off right is essential – you’ve got your O.J., your egg white omelette, and your pump up Katy Perry playlist on repeat. Add in an exfoliating face scrub to your morning routine and you’ll come to class feeling like a rockstar yourself. Our favorites are the Walnut Complexion Scrub and Rub N’ Buff Salt Scrub.

Jet Setting

A day in the life of a model is never boring; sometimes, you’ll wake up at home and be in a new time zone by dinner time. To keep travel light without having to sacrifice your skin, try throwing in the Clean Truth Cleansing Cloths, which will fit perfectly in your carry-on. When you land, spray on some refreshing Cucumber Face Mist to refresh and revitalize (and combat the jet lag).

Afternoon Pick Me Up

Move over Starbucks latte; it’s time to make room for a new afternoon essential. A face tonic is a must-have after a morning or midday workout, which oftentimes leaves our pores clogged and looking dirty. This face tonic is grease-free (score!) and will leave you feeling renewed, replenished and ready to tackle the second half of your day with ease.

Sleeping Beauty

Bedtime is the most crucial time for getting your skin in check. Unwind after a long day with a lavender body oil – a scent that has been proven to increase relaxation and improve sleep (see ya later, insomnia). Then, apply an Invigorating Overnight Treatment to do some repair work for you, while you catch some Zzzs.

“When it comes holiday party beauty, your options are endless, but we like to think the most festive look involves luminous skin, glimmering eyes, and a statement lip. Sound like too much? We can assure you it’s not. With the expert guidance of celeb makeup artist Lauren Andersen, you can easily pull off this memorable beauty look. Keep reading for the step-by-step tutorial!

The look calls for radiant skin, so choose a luminous foundation and go easy on the face powder.

Step One: Amber Eye Shadow

Use a small flat brush to press an amber gold eye shadow into your lid.

Apply it all over, and then carry the shadow down along your lower lash line.

We’re using the copper shade from Kevyn Aucoin’s The Eyeshadow Duo in 204.

Step Two: Garnet Eye Shadow

Smoke out the eye shadow with a darker shade in the outer corners and along the lash line.

We’re using Garnet from Lorac’s Pro Palette.

Step Three: Eyeliner

Define your eyes by smudging brown eyeliner into your upper lash line, concentrating on the outer corners.

To add a bit of drama, line your waterline with a rich brown eye pencil.

To make sure it stays in place all night long, use a waterproof formula like this Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Whiskey.

Step Four: Soft Pink Blush

For the cheeks, apply a generous dusting of a pale pinky-peach blush.

We’re using Chanel’s Joues Contraste Powder Blush in Innocence.

Step Five: Oxblood Lipstick

The finishing touch? A statement lip.

Choose a warm, deep red like oxblood to complement the golden look.

Andersen recommends applying dark colors like this Avon Ultra Color Bold Lipstick in Bold Bordeaux with a lip brush for better control.

Add a fresh coat of mascara before you head out the door, and you’ll be holiday party-ready!”
