You might know Alyssa Miller as the girl who rose to supermodel fame through modeling for Guess, Victoria’s Secret, and SI Swimsuit Edition, but at heart, she is a laid-back country girl who loves to ride horses. Boho fashion powerhouse For Love and Lemons recently teamed up with Alyssa to get an inside look at her life in Texas, where she works on writing music and taking life at a new, slower pace.  In addition to modeling, Alyssa did all the styling and photography in the shots below. We’ll be watching closely to see where her creativity takes her, and as she records her first album we expect it will be amazing new places! Keep scrolling to experience a day in the life of Alyssa Miller.

Days Off with: Alyssa Miller

If you’re like us, you’re welcoming Fall with open arms. And what better way to kick off the season than by exploring Austin, Texas with model, musician and animal lover Alyssa Miller. An Austin resident for just over a year, Alyssa gives us a glimpse into her surreal new life, away from LA and NY, the bustling cities she used to call home.

Read her full story to learn about her evolving career and to get a glimpse into a perfect Fall day in Austin. And let us just say – if the cooler autumn weather doesn’t give you the chills, Alyssa’s “Days Off With” story, complete with wide open ranch spaces and impromptu swims in her neighboring lake, will.

All photos were taken by Alyssa herself.

linebreakWhat does a typical day in the life of Alyssa Miller look like?

I usually wake pretty early to feed the chickens and the dogs, make my self a cup of tea, crawl back into bed and read the news/catch up on emails. I’ll play a bit of guitar, I love singing and writing songs everyday, it feeds my soul. I’m working on recording my first EP at the moment.  I try to get in a work out everyday I have off, I’ll do a spin class or Pilates. I love going for a little swim at Barton Springs after for a cool down.  I usually try to get some writing done for my Web Series I am working on with my partner Amy Bracco, called Models Wrote This. A comedic take on the everyday lives of models, stay tuned. Ultimately my perfect days off consist of a little rest and relaxation, a little productivity and creativity on some of my projects and a little activity. Perfect balance.

We see you’re an animal lover from all your furry friends you’ve featured on IG -Can you give us the name of your pets and one word to describe their personality?

My dogs:

Charlie my Boston Terrier – Gregarious

Tennessee my Mixed Breed – Lover

My chickens:

Loretta – Loud

Dolly – Sweet

Tammy – Rebellious

linebreakHow long have you lived in Texas? What made you first move to Austin and what has kept you there?

I’ve lived in Austin just over a year. I was burnt out on NY, I was pushing myself too hard with work and travel. A few friends had just bought a place in Texas so I started coming down for the weekends and just completely fell in love. I haven’t really fallen out of love either, it’s still the honeymoon phase for me. I love the people here, I love being able to just jump in the river for a quick swim anytime I want, seeing amazing live music on a whim, having chickens roam free in my yard, it’s just a higher quality of life.

We hear that you just moved into a new place – can you tell us a little bit about your new home, the aesthetic, your favorite part of the house?

It’s a bit more modern than I imagined a house of mine being, but it just had the best energy. It’s very special, so many amazing details. The space is very open and airy as well, which I love.

What are you looking for (furniture pieces, design inspiration, other decor) to decorate your new space?

I have such a love of furniture, typically Mid Century Modern, and interior design. I have collected so many amazing pieces over the years. I LOVE chairs, collect them like a mad woman. So I haven’t had to do much, but as a collector I always have my eye out for special pieces.linebreak

linebreakHow has living in Austin effected your career as a model?

To be honest, I’ve taken a major step back. But by choice, I was burnt out after years of flying non-stop and not really taking a break. Now I’m lucky enough to choose the jobs I want to take and do my own projects on the side. I’ve changed my whole approach, and my life is more about what makes me happy and keeps me healthy. Now when I am on the road, I am so happy to be there and can be fully present in the moment.

What is your favorite part of your job?

I like to think of my self as a story teller, whether that’s through modeling or through music, through my photography or through my show. Telling a story is what I love to do.linebreak

linebreakCan you give us a glimpse into what Fall is like in Austin?

Fall in Austin is amazing, it stays quite warm year round so it’s almost as if we get Fall twice, instead of Winter. The leaves turn and I get to cozy up in all my favorite sweaters, drink tea, and write, it’s my personal heaven.

On my day off, I’d wear:

An easy dress, or Jeans and a tee.

My favorite styling piece(s) for Fall are:

A good square toe ankle boot, obsessing on this shape at the moment.linebreak

linebreakOne part of your routine you couldn’t do without is:

I couldn’t do with out singing for a day, my living room has these amazing high ceilings and it makes for some nice acoustics, I just walk around singing all day long.

The song/album I’m playing on repeat this season:

Kevin Morby – Singing Sawlinebreak

linebreakWhat are some of your favorite hangouts in Austin?

Josephine House for brunch and bloody Mary’s.

Perla’s for lobster rolls.

Barton Springs for a dip and the best people watching.

The white horse for a dance, a drink, and tacos from the truck out back.

Continental club for the best live music.

In your next life you will be…?

An elephant ️<3

linebreakThe best piece of advice you have ever received and from who?

When I decided to move to Texas, I was really nervous to tell my agent, and she was so lovely and understanding. She said, “Babe, you only live once. Live it all the way up.” So simple, but it struck me because here I was after doing the same thing for so many years, afraid to take a chance and try something new. It was just the encouragement I needed, and I’ve never been happier.

Ashley Moore

Meet Ashley Moore, the 23-year-old North Carolina-raised model currently dominating our Instagram feed. Naturally gorgeous, camera-ready or just lounging around in her sweats, here’s why the widely vivacious model is the latest girl on our mind.

If you weren’t modelling what career would you be pursuing?
Acting, which I am doing at the moment in addition to modelling. Who says you can’t have more than one career?

What is your idea of the perfect date?
Something simple and classic, someone to come pick me up, open the door, and take me to dinner, or something exciting and unforgettable like skydiving! Either way, showing respect and manners are non-negotiable.

What gets your attention?

Intelligent guys who know who they are, and know what they want.

What should a guy not wear on a first date?
Flip flops. Too soon to see your feet!

How do you spend your downtime?
When I get downtime, I just relax, whatever that feels like at the time. I love to watch movies, read, lay by the pool and try new restaurants out.

How would you describe your personal style?
My style changes every day, everything from girly-girl to tomboy or even just sweats. It just depends on my mood.

What impresses you when it comes to men’s style?
Anyone who doesn’t try too hard, but I’m definitely a sucker for guys in their workout gear!linebreak

 How old are you?

I am 21 years young.

Where are you from?

I am a proud Iowan girl from Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Do you have a book that changed your life?IMG_2888

This is going to sound sooooo nerdy but I absolutely love to read. It’s probably my favorite thing to do, and has been since I was just a little girl. In my senior year of college, we were assigned a book called “The Difference Maker” By John Maxwell. No one actually read any of the books we got assigned, but I am a huge nerd so I read every single one! This book, in particular, changed my life because it gave me a whole new perspective on how the simplest thing like having a good attitude can have an immensely positive impact on how successful you are in life. Since then, I follow so many tips the book gave me and I swear by it, I am such a happier person.

What inspires you the most?

Family. I have five siblings and they are all much younger than I am. They motivate me to be the best that I can be because I want to set an amazing example for them. I also look up to my mom and my grandmother. They are the strongest women I have ever met and they inspire me to be the same.

What’s been your greatest achievement (so far)?

Education is so important to me and will continue to be, so I would have to say my biggest achievement (so far) is getting my associates degree two weeks before my high school diploma. I was only 16 at the time when I made the decision to make that a goal of mine. It was one of the first big goals I worked really hard over a long period of time to accomplish, and it was extremely difficult to achieve because of my life situation at the time. SO many times I asked myself why I was doing it and wanted to just give up, but I stuck with it and it served me very well because now I am 21 and I already have two degrees!

What’s your favorite punctuation mark?

Definitely the !!!! I use it all the time when I’m messaging or emailing people. I feel like if you know me it just makes sense because I’m pretty out there. If not, I’ve often wondered if people think I’m yelling at them all the time…Lol!

Can you hula hoop?

Yes I can! But to be completely honest, I am kind of dysfunctional when it comes to any sport involving objects, so let’s just say I can and keep it at that.

If you had to choose one thing you were most passionate about, what would it be and why?

That’s hard to choose because I believe in being passionate about everything you do. If you’re not passionate about it… Then why are you doing it? But if I had to pick, I’d say I’m really passionate about traveling. I feel like it’s important to travel the world and see all that’s out there! There’s so much of it and so little time!

Are your feet the same size?

No they are not and it infuriates me! My right is almost a half size bigger than my left, so I buy shoes that fit perfectly on the left foot, and my toes are left to suffer on the right because I secretly want to punish that foot for being bigger.

IMG_2926What’s under your bed?

Clothes… Lots and lots of clothes.

How many bones have you broken?

TOO MANY!! I was a competitive cheerleader for over 14 years and between the flipping and the stunting (I was the flyer) I’ve had my fair share of broken arms, fingers, and even fractured my neck once!

What food will you absolutely not, under any circumstances, eat?

I am not a picky eater at all! But for some reason, my taste buds do not like seafood. Even the smell makes my stomach turn!

Which emoji would best capture your essence?

What’s the most embarrassing trend you gave in to?

I try not to do trends because I think it is so much cooler when you just do you, and it ends up being a trend– because after all, that is how they start! But I’ll admit when I was in middle school (7th grade) I cared a lot about what others thought, and I got bullied pretty badly. I have really bushy eyebrows (bordering on uni-brow when I don’t maintain them), and back in the day pencil-thin eyebrows were the “cool” and “beautiful” thing. So one day I went home and shaved off my eyebrows. Let’s just say the results were much worse than just putting up with the bullies ! AND OMG THEY DID NOT GROW BACK IN PRETTY.

polinaonedayatatimecoverlinebreak “I have a little ritual I do before going to bed. Every night I put on an episode of 30 Rock or The Office or Friends. I doze off to the sound of jokes that I have definitely memorized by now, but somehow still make me smile. It makes me super happy because I love comedy. I think it has a special language, and once learned you can’t help but recognize it all around you. Performing in comedies is my favorite kind of acting.   linebreak

Polina snaps a selfie with her script in front of One Day at a Time’s Filming Stage

Polina & world-famous producer Norman Lear

Polina & world-famous producer Norman Lear

To say I was excited I was to work with Norman Lear on the reboot of his famous show One Day at a Time would be an understatement. Norman is arguably one of the greatest comedy creators of all time– All in the Family, The Jeffersons and Who’s the Boss are his shows! One Day at a Time is a sitcom (that’s short for situational comedy). The show is filmed in front of a live audience, and the laugh track you hear on shows like Friends is coming from people in the audience watching the scene. As a result, sitcoms are filmed very differently than other television genres. For example: if a joke doesn’t land or something doesn’t quite work, the producers and writers can change it on the spot. They might walk up to an actor and say “instead of saying your line, say this joke instead”, and watch the crowd react to gauge whether the joke worked. It’s a hybrid of theater and television that’s really fascinating– especially if you’re a comedy nerd like me and get to watch it unfold in front of your eyes.

I was surprised to find out that unlike most TV shows, where you only show up on the day of filming and do your scenes, sitcoms involve a full week of rehearsals. Each scene is rehearsed separately and the episode is then performed chronologically from beginning to end for the producers, and again later for the Network and Studio that are backing the show. It’s like a mini play! There is such a great sense of community because you get to watch everyone else do their scene and be present for the entire script.

Polina and Rita Moreno

Tuesdays are when the show is filmed in front of the live audience. If there are a lot of extras in the scene or the scene takes place on a set that’s not directly in front of the audience (as was the case with me) these scenes will be pre-taped the day before, and played for the audience. It was so much fun to watch my scene with amazing actress Justina Machado, and hear the audience laugh and react to it in real time.

And did I mention that Rita Moreno plays Justina’s mom on the show? Rita Moreno has an EGOT! (That’s an Emmy, a Grammy, and Oscar and a Tony). There are only 12 people who have received all four. You’ve probably seen Rita as Anita in the original West Side Story among the countless outstanding films she’s been in.

Needless to say, I could not have had a more amazing time. I feel like I need to go back and watch all those Friends episodes again. Now that I know all the behind the scenes action I can watch it with a new understanding. BRB– I’m pulling up my Netflix account. And speaking of, One Day at a Time will be released by Netflix early next year!”

The cast and crew applaud each other for a successful episode wrap.

Where are you from?

I’m from Irvine, California.

Do you have a book that changed your life?

I recently read The Catcher in the Rye for the first time and I think it was really important for me to read, especially at this point in my life. The main character displays so many different aspects of the teenage experience.

What inspires you the most?

I think mornings inspire me the most. I have these really tall east-facing windows in my living room and sometimes I sit and drink coffee there for a few minutes after getting up (which is getting later and later now that summer is here!). Those moments always provide me with inspiration for my day, whether it’s artistic, academic, or just an idea of how I want to spend the time.

What’s been your greatest achievement (so far)?

I think it’s a tie. When I was 11, I was solo piano accompanist for my honors choir in front of a sold-out audience of 2000 people at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts – it was very nerve-racking and took lots of preparation, but in the end it was an amazing experience! Also, photos I posted on National Geographic were selected for display in VP Biden’s official residence in Washington, D.C. two times – in December, 2015, and January, 2016. It felt great to be recognized for my interests, and I am so grateful for it.

If you had to choose one thing you were most passionate about, what would it be and why?

I am most passionate about art, in any form. My main focus has been in the photographic and digital arts. I have found that my life is a lot better if there is some artistic element to every day.

What food will you absolutely not, under any circumstances, eat?

I have a rule: no ham, no lamb, no spam.

Where would you take your dream vacation?

I have always wanted to go to France or Italy. I suppose my dream vacation would be visiting both!

When you eat a pack of Skittles, do you save the best flavors for last? Or do they go first?

My system is in rainbow-order. Eat all of the red Skittles, then orange, yellow, green, and purple. Trust me, it will change your life.

Favorite movie or TV show soundtrack?

I love listening to Howard Shore’s The Lord of the Rings soundtrack. It makes me feel like I’m going on a journey through New Zealand.

Whose fictional wardrobe do you want most?

If my wardrobe was full of the costumes from Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, I would be a happy camper.

What’s one goal you definitely plan on achieving this year?

This year, my goal is to find balance in school, work, and creativity.

If you had to choose one thing you were most passionate about, what would it be and why?

I’m most passionate about horses. I love spending time with my horse and taking her to competitions. There is nothing like the bond between horse and rider.

Which superpower would you want?

Time travel.  I would want to experience different time periods and what life was like during them, and still be able to return to present day.

What’s your favorite punctuation mark?

The quotation mark. It’s always fun to quote someone.

Can you hula hoop?

Yes! I can jump rope with a hula hoop too!

What’s under your bed?

I have nothing under my bed except occasionally my cat, it’s her favorite hideout.

Have you ever prank called someone?

One time my twin and I prank called my best friend. She would not get off of Netflix, so we went into the other room and called her, pretending like we were the Netflix company calling to tell her that the account ran out of ‘watching time.’ She believed the call, but later found out it was us and went back to watching.

How many bones have you broken?

I’ve broken a bone in my foot two different times while bathing my horse in sandals. The first time, she moved over and stepped on my foot. The second time, she spooked and jumped over buckets of shampoo, landing on my other foot. Don’t ever bathe a horse wearing open-toed shoes!

What food will you absolutely not, under any circumstances, eat?

I love food and will try just about anything! The only food I strongly dislike is olives. They are WAY too salty.

Where would you take your dream vacation?

I’ve always dreamed of going to Tahiti. I love the warm tropical climates, white sandy beaches, and crystal clear water.

Which emoji would best capture your essence?

I definitely have to pick the palm tree emoji. 🌴🌴🌴🌴

Favorite movie or TV show soundtrack?

Titanic. My favorite song from the film is “My Heart Will Go On.”

What food will you absolutely not, under any circumstances, eat?

Pistachios have never appealed to me. Their green/brown coloration just looks bad.

Where would you take your dream vacation?

Bora Bora.

Exclamation points!!! In big amounts!!!! I’m always excited about something!

If you had to choose one thing you were most passionate about, what would it be and why?

Choosing one thing would be really hard because I can be passionate about so many things that it becomes overwhelming. Art and traveling are both examples. However, I would have to say that I am most passionate about my family and all of the other amazing people I have in my life.

Who are you most envious of—real or fictional—and why?

Definitely Princess Mia from Princess Diaries because I’m kind of hoping that someone comes along and tells me that I’m the princess of some beautiful land, especially with that closet that she gets (favorite part of the movie).

Definitely either the heart eyes kitty emoji or the sunflower. I completely overuse emojis but they make conversations so much more fun!

 Which superpower would you want?

I would love to be able to read other people’s minds. Sometimes I can’t help but wonder what in the world other people are thinking, especially boys.

When you eat a pack of Skittles, do you save the best flavors for last? Or do they go first?

Definitely save the best for last, you have to let the anticipation build!

What food will you absolutely not, under any circumstances, eat?
I will eat pretty much anything once! One time I ordered octopus salad because the waiter told me it was the best thing on the menu… I thought it would be a lettuce salad with a tiny bit of octopus that I could try. I was surprised when I got it and it was just a pile of tentacles, but it wasn’t bad!

What’s the best way to comfort you when you’re having a really terrible day?
A long nap with my two kittens, macaroni and cheese, and talking on the phone with my mom!

If you had to describe yourself as an animal, what would it be?
Probably a golden retriever! I’m blonde and bubbly like them, and I love to be outside!
