She’s so Nous! Meet, Emma ~

Name?:

Emma Surmon

Where are you from?:

Calgary, Canada (… and yes I love maple syrup).

Do you have a book that changed your life?

It’s hard to say what books have changed my life, but I’m currently making my way through reading all of Maya Angelou’s Autobiographies and they are some of my favorite books of all time. They really opened my eyes to a different life experience than my own by telling the story of such an amazing and inspiring woman.  I highly recommend her first novel, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” to everyone.

Emma x H&M, featured in Times Square, New York City.

What’s been your greatest achievement (so far)?

One of the things I am most proud of in terms of modeling achievements was being on a Billboard in Times Square for a job I did with H&M! I had no idea that it was going to happen, which made it such a surreal experience. It was so crazy seeing myself 20 feet tall and in the center of New York City. That is an image I will never forget and I am so grateful for the opportunities afforded to me.

Which superpower would you want to have?

Teleportation — without a doubt. Sometimes modeling requires SO much traveling. It would be amazing to just teleport to my job and not have to take a red-eye halfway across the world! That being said, I LOVE traveling, but teleporting would make always having any luggage exceed 50 lbs. much less stressful.

Where is the most beautiful place on earth and why?

One of the most beautiful places on earth is Bermuda. Little known fact — I lived in Bermuda for 6 years of my childhood and have the most amazing and beautiful memories of the beaches there. The island is right in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean and is so isolated and beautiful. If you ever get the opportunity I would highly recommend a trip there, the pink sand beaches are beyond compare.

What food will you absolutely not, under any circumstances, eat?

Meat!! I’ve been a vegetarian for around 5 years now, and it is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. There are so many amazing foods you can now indulge in that are completely cruelty-free, especially in LA! If you haven’t been to Cafe Gratitude yet, you have to go! It is some of the best food I have ever eaten. I guarantee that meat lovers and veggies alike will love it.

Have you overcome one of your fears?

I have overcome some of my fears, the biggest one being moving away from home and starting a life in career modeling by myself in a new country. It was very nerve-wracking for me to leave behind my tight-knit family and move to New York a couple of years ago, however, the opportunities that I have been able to experience because of it have been some of my most cherished memories. Nevertheless, some fears are harder to overcome. I’m still deathly afraid of spiders and I don’t think that will change anytime soon.

Who was your childhood crush?

I was a big nerd growing up and my brother and I watched a LOT of Lord of the Rings. My first crush was Legolas, (played by Orlando Bloom) from the series. I thought I was going to marry him and continued to crush on him well into my teens.

If you were an animated character, who would you be and why?

If I were an animated character I think I would be Tina from Bobs Burgers. She is so hilarious and awkward and is definitely still finding her place in the world. Something I definitely relate to.

What’s your favorite weekend activity?

Hiking! I absolutely love exploring nature and going on walks. Back home, in Calgary, I live near the Rocky Mountains so there are really amazing hikes you can do… when it’s warm enough that is! I’ve checked out a couple spectacular hikes in LA already and am so happy that there are great natural spaces nearby to the city.

How do you kick back and relax?

In an ideal world, I would kick back and relax on the beach every day and read a good book….. but normally I end up snuggled up in bed watching Shameless instead.

With a new year on the horizon, people are embracing retrospection and reevaluating the impact that 2017 played on their lives.  In an effort to learn from, as well as celebrate each and everyday, we asked Nous girls, Maggimae and Logan to reflect on what made 2017 stand out, as well what they are anticipating for the upcoming year. Read below to find out what they have planned for in their next chapter!:

Hi ladies! Thank you for sharing your time with our readers. Pick three words to describe 2017.

Maggimae: Happy. Busy. Fun.

Logan: Relentless. Far-fetched. Prosperous. 2017 has easily been the wildest year of my life! It threw new challenges and opportunities at me left and right. It also led me to great friendships and revealed the best support team I could ever imagine.

Maggimae having a blast in her home state of Kansas.

Did you travel anywhere? If so, where?

Maggimae: As usual, I went back to Kansas for some of the summer to see my family and that’s always the best ever! My parents also got a house in New Mexico on the river up in the mountains (also 4 miles away from a natural hot springs) so I additionally traveled there. It’s so gorgeous and inspiring to be in nature!! I want to be a mountain woman someday, haha.

Logan: Yes! I think my 2017 consisted of half land-time, half air-time. In the first week of January, I flew to Shanghai, China to model for the agency, Feliz! I lived there for three months and then flew home to Minnesota for about two weeks until I was in the air again! After those two weeks, I made my way to Mexico City to model for the agency, Wanted! Once I returned home, I planned my initial week trip to Los Angeles to interview with modeling agencies! It did not take me long to pack my life into my car, round-up my parents, and start the twenty-seven-hour drive to my new home in Los Angeles!

Logan on set in Shanghai, China.

What was an unexpected joy this past year?

Logan: I really did not expect to like the food in Shanghai, China as much as I did! I will confess that sometimes I was unsure of what I was eating but for the most part, it was really good! Shamelessly admitting that I ate the street food for dinner almost every night!

Most overused phrase during this past year?

Maggimae: “Dead.”

(Urban Dictionary Translation: When you’re passed the point of something being hilariously funny; when you’ve laughed as hard as you possibly can!)

Logan modeling for Nupcias Magazine in Mexico City.

Was there a goal that you accomplished in 2017 that you can now cross off your bucket list?

Logan: There are two things I can now check off my bucket list! The first one was to be on a billboard. When I was in Mexico City, I shot for Liverpool’s Thats It back-to-school campaign! The photos were being used all over Mexico City including on billboards!! It was definitely an exciting surprise to see when I was walking around the city! I can also cross “climb a pyramid” off of my bucket list! When my parents came to visit me in Mexico City, I took them to climb the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon! It was such a great experience with an even better view. I am happy I got to experience the climb with my parents!

If you had to pick only one, what was one of your favorite jobs that you booked this past year? Why?

Maggimae modeling alongside her BFF and fellow Nous Model, Britt, for Boys & Arrows.

Maggimae: I would have to say the Boys and Arrows campaign. It was super fun to shoot with my BFF Britt, stay in a hotel with her, and shoot with a really creative crew. It was basically just us dancing around and having fun the whole time at the shoot. Def more play than work!

Logan: One of my favorite jobs from this past year took place when I was living in Mexico City! I got booked to shoot two editorials for the bridal magazine, Nupcias (pictured above). The company flew the crew and myself to a resort in Punta Mita where we stayed for almost a week! The resort was beyond beautiful and the crew was incredibly fun so it pretty much felt like a vacation!

Did you discover any new effective ways to spend your time this past year? (Planning methods, new hobbies, etc.)

Maggimae: My mom taught me how to macrame so I have been making super cute plant hangers. Also this year I have been doing lots of different kinds of hikes around LA. It’s really is gorgeous here!

Logan: There are a few new hobbies I have picked up this past year that I really enjoy doing in my down time. One of them is to write letters either to friends (both from home and the friends I have met along the way) and also to family members. Who doesn’t love getting mail?! Plus, writing really helps me relax and de-stress for the night so it’s a win-win situation. Another way that I use my time is by doing research on literally anything and everything. There is an endless amount of information we can learn and it is always fun to expand our knowledge!!

Logan rocking her favorite bell bottom jeans.

What was your most worn clothing item of 2017?

Maggimae: My vintage Levi‘s denim jacket. It goes with evvvverything!

Logan: That would be my Flying Monkey bell-bottom blue jeans! They are SO COMFORTABLE. It is hard to find bell-bottom jeans that are the right length, but these are perfect. They are made for being travel day and casual day pants!

Name a trend that you’d like to see continue from last year into this upcoming year.

Logan: Talking fashion, the trend that I would like to see continue into 2018 is the 70’s and 80’s style of clothing! I loved the wide-leg flares of the 70’s, but also fell in love with florals and pinstripes of the 80’s. Really anything that is a “blast from the past” trend is something I will be excited about!

If there was one thing you could change about 2017, what would it be?

Logan: I would change my answers from “no” to “yes” when being asked to hangout or go out! I want to work on stepping out of my comfort zone and start saying “yes” more to invitations. If I would have agreed to these invites, I might have made more friends, more memories, and I would have been available for more opportunities!

Maggimae: Anything I worried or stressed about because, as always, everything turns out okay!

What were some of the best books that you read during this past year that you are eager to recommend?

Maggimae: I know it’s late and I’ve had the book since like 2011, but ‘The Secret.”  If you actually apply the tips that it says for you to do each day, it really is helpful with dealing with the small, stressful stuff in life!

Maggimae with her two dates for New Years!

Do you have any exciting New Years Plans? If so, how are you celebrating?

Maggimae: I always love spending New Years in hanging out with my furbabies so I wake up refreshed for the new year. 🙂

What is something that you are looking forward to this year?

Logan: I am looking forward to making California my home! I will be building new relationships and gaining new experiences this coming year and I cannot wait to see what that involves!

What are you hoping for more of this coming year?

Maggimae: Start booking commercials!

Pick three New Year Resolutions that you hope to stick with throughout this upcoming year.

Logan: Learn another language (Spanish) and become bilingual, Volunteer more on the weekends, Say yes to adventures.

Maggimae: POSITIVITY (always try to see the good in people and situations), health (stick with working out and eating lots of greens and fruit), and to enjoy the little things/be grateful!

She’s so Nous! Meet, Hallie ~

Name?:

Hallie Uhrig

Where are you from?:

Jupiter, FL

What is your guilty pleasure?:

I’m kind of embarrassed to admit this, but reality T.V. Yes, I know it’s all fake, but I can’t help but get sucked into binge watching it!

What food will you absolutely not, under any circumstances, eat?:

Mayonnaise. It just terrifies me. I honestly can’t even give you a valid reason why. I’ve never even had it. I guess just how jiggly it is and the fact that it has boiled eggs in it. I can’t even handle touching it.

Have you overcome one of your fears?:

I have actually overcome most of my fears (not mayonnaise yet). I’ve gotten addicted to the adrenaline rush you get when you face them. Public speaking, creepy critters, skydiving, shark diving; it’s unlike anything else, looking your fears in the eye and conquering them.

What makes you feel nostalgic?:

Watching old after school T.V. shows. As I’m writing this, I’ve got reruns of SpongeBob playing in the background. It’s so funny watching these shows now and catching all the jokes that I missed as a kid.

What inspires you the most?:

Children have been a huge inspiration to me in my life. I coached gymnastics throughout high school and working with kids gave me a whole new outlook on life. They’re silly and innocent, and full of energy and life. Too often, we as adults forget to have fun, love purely, and just ‘be a kid’ enjoying life.

Do you have a book that changed your life?:

Not so much a book, but an author: David Foster Wallace. A teacher played his speech, “This is Water,” in class one day and the way he spoke… it was like he could read my mind. Ever since then, he has always been my go-to for inspiration.

Where would you take your dream vacation?:

Definitely somewhere deep in Africa where I can see all of the exotic animals in the raw untouched wild.

Who is your role model, and why?:

One of my biggest role models is Emma Watson. I grew up with the Harry Potter series and it’s kind of beautiful how my childhood heroes grew into the real-life heroes they are today. I admire Emma so much for her contributions to society as a humanitarian. She’s brilliant, beautiful, talented, and is an all-around class-act.

What is your favorite weekend activity?:

Anything outdoors! In Florida, I would spend most of my weekends out on the boat; swimming, wake surfing, diving, fishing. Here in California I love to spend my free days hiking and exploring all of the nature.

Do you have any mottos you live by?:

“You can either be a victim or a survivor.” We all go through struggles in life, but at the end of the day, you get to choose how you let them effect you. You can choose to let it get you down and let it negatively define you, or you can choose to allow your struggles to make you stronger and be a survivor. The choice is yours.

She’s so Nous! Meet, Lexi ~

Name?:

Lexi Wood.

Where are you from?:

 Toronto, Canada.

Which super power would you want to have?:

If i had to pick any super power, it would definitely be instant travel, where I could be anywhere I wanted by just the snap of my fingers!

What’s your guilty pleasure?:

My current guilty pleasure is eating Cheetos… puff Cheetos, crunchy Cheetos, jalapeño Cheetos…. all of the Cheetos.

Where would you take your dream vacation?:

Anywhere in the South of France! I love the vibes there. The fashion, and the weather is beautiful too!

Which emoji would best capture your essence?:

The angel face!  All my friends call me ‘Angel’ because I’m known for being very sweet and for being the good girl!

What are you most proud of?:

I’m most proud of my relationship with my family! My mom, dad, sister, and I are all best friends.

What’s your favourite 1990’s/2000’s jam?:

Candy by Mandy Moore! My sister took the funniest video of me doing a full-on dance routine to this song last week.

How would your best friend describe you?:

Kind, genuine, driven, grateful, strong, and empathetic.

What’s your go-to karaoke song?:

Dancing Machine by The Jackson 5.

What’s your favourite weekend activity?:

My favourite weekend activity is probably going to the Sunday flea market with my family/friends!

Do you have any mottos you live by?:

I love the sayings –  “Stand up for something even if it means standing alone” and “It’s already yours.”

I live by the first motto more-so in my personal life and the second one in my professional endeavors. I feel like, if you work hard and give your everything, while putting your heart/soul into your tasks, you can make anything happen!

She’s so Nous! Meet, Maddie ~

1. Name:

Maddie White

2. Where are you from?

I’m from a town in England called Preston, it’s on the north west coast close to Manchester.

3. What food will you absolutely not, under any circumstances, eat?

Cilantro, if I see it in my food I have to pick every last piece out, I can’t stand the flavour!

4. What would the title of your memoir be?

Definitely my Instagram bio – ‘what I lack in tit I make up for in wit’ I think it describes my dry sense of humour perfectly.

5. Where would you take your dream vacation?

I would love to go to the pig beach in Exuma, the Bahamas. I think the pigs are so adorable and I can’t think of anything cooler than swimming in the ocean with them, give me a pig over a shark any day.

6. What is your dream pet? (It doesn’t have to be traditional!)

A raccoon, I’m a die hard fan of pumpkin the raccoon and I love how they use their hands to eat like people.

7. Has anything/anyone ever saved your life before?

I was on holiday with my family in Phuket, Thailand over Christmas and New Years in 2004. My mum and brother were off scuba diving and my dad and I decided to sleep in an extra 30 minutes that morning. The Boxing Day tsunami hit Phuket around 9.00am just as we were heading to the elevator. Luckily we were fine, as were my mum and brother who were safe out at sea, but had we got into the elevator 5 minutes earlier we would’ve been sat eating breakfast on the beachfront and wouldn’t have been so lucky.

8. What’s your guilty pleasure?

Talenti Mint Choc Chip Ice Cream!

9. When you eat a pack of candy, do you save the best flavors for last? Or do they go first?

I actually like an even distribution of the best flavours, for example in a starburst pack I’ll eat the pink ones periodically, they’re something to look forward to while suffering through the other colours, so I’ll eat one of every colour before the pink and then restart the cycle-a bit anal I know!

10. What’s the most embarrassing trend that you gave into?

I’m not sure if you could call it a trend, but when I had braces I used to go for yellow and green bands. I thought they were super fun but in hindsight they just looked like I had yellow teeth or food stuck in them.

11. Who was your childhood crush?

Aaron Taylor-Johnson! He was in a huge teen movie in England called ‘Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging’ and he was just the biggest heart throb.

12. What is the funniest thing that happened to your recently?

I was on a long haul red eye from Los Angeles to London, I always buy a bunch of snacks for the trip because it’s a 12 hour flight. I ended up sitting on a huge, half eaten bar of chocolate and fell asleep. I woke up as we were landing and stood up to disembark the plane and realized I was covered in chocolate. It was too late to use the plane bathroom so I had to shamefully walk all the way to, and through immigration with chocolate all over my butt and the back of my legs. I ended up listening to music with the volume all the way up, just to drown out the people around me laughing under their breath!

In a city filled to the brim with legendary movie stars, reality celebrity lifestyles and major ad campaigns everywhere you look (and the men and women behind those campaigns casually picking out produce alongside you at Trader Joes), even the most confident gal can oftentimes feel the pressure to keep up in Los Angeles. The fact that it’s (pretty much) always summer here, too, further ads fuel to the fire; there’s no fleece and cashmere to hide behind. But one longtime makeup artist to the stars is revolutionizing how women perceive themselves with an empowering fitness movement that combines feel-good endorphins, bikinis and a whole ‘lotta girl power.

Anna Branson is changing the game with Barely Hiking, an idea that finally came to life a year ago in Malibu and is quickly gaining momentum in LA and across the country; Branson even has girls on the east coast hashtagging and joining in on the movement. The original idea behind Barely Hiking was this: a pack of girls walking into Runyon Canyon in nothing but hiking shoes and killer bikinis. With the help of supportive girlfriends and clients who immediately thought this was, well, a kickass idea, Barely Hiking had its first hike this year. The result? Amazing.

@barelyhiking

“Five minutes after walking into the gate at Runyon, all insecurities were gone,” remembers Branson, who initially wasn’t sure the reaction Barely Hiking would garner from fellow hikers. The support she received from girls—and guys!—alike, however, was overwhelmingly positive and free of any cat calling or side-eyed-sneers. “It was so empowering.”

Runyon Canyon is a 160-acre park is situated in the heart of Hollywood and jam-packed with patrons daily (among them Justin Bieber, Vanessa Hudgens and many a Kardashian), making it a prime location for her movement to gain a spotlight from the public eye—and to inspire and empower girls to be proud of their bodies, flaws and all, no matter what shape or size.

If the concept sounds intimidating, she makes an excellent point that venturing to a pool party or to the beach is equally as scary. These insecurities are something Branson hopes to change by having girls embrace the beauty of their bodies in a natural element, free of the pressures of what we like to call ‘celebreality’. We have to admit that if there’s anyone we can trust, it’s surely Branson herself- the go-to makeup artist for a star-studded roster of clients and Beauty Editor of Darling Magazine. To find out when the next hike is, check out @barelyhiking on Instagram. We’ll see you (and your favorite bikini) there.

California namesake brand PacSun has always been a favorite among the West Coast cool crowd. And with its recent rebranding and new-age, modern storefront on the world famous Third Street Promenade, the beach-ready brand continues to solidify its place as one of the raddest retailers in town. According to CEO Gary Schoenfeld, PacSun took two years to restructure the store and now considers this Santa Monica location a flagship. The newly redesigned storefront features an eye-catching 22-foot billboard created by LA artist Tyler Spangler and is just steps from the beach, making a bikini purchase even more tempting (but justified). Head on over to admire the views and shop favorites like RVCA, Hurley, and Gypsy Warrior, and who knows – you may even bump into Kendall and Kylie.
