Model

Nous model, Aliya Protto, has only been signed with us since the beginning of twenty-eighteen – yet, her experience in the entertainment industry is already layered with success.

As a newly-retired USA athlete, Aliya has spent over a decade of her life performing in the competitive sport of Rhythmic Gymnastics. Now that she has officially transitioned into the modeling-sphere, we became eager to learn her backstory, understanding the wisdom that comes along with competing in a national sport. To read about her journey, as well as gain insight as to how rhythmic gymnastics has influenced Aliya’s modeling strengths, take a glance below:

Flashback to a young Aliya, who’s about to ‘get the ball rolling’ with her Rhythmic Gymnastics career.

1. At what age did you start participating in Rhythmic Gymnastics?

I started Rhythmic gymnastics when I was seven years old.

2. What motivated you to partake in Rhythmic Gymnastics?

Rhythmic actually kind of came to me. I was scouted outside of a gymnastics school, and went to a few trial classes. After that, my mother told me: “Ali, you can’t do gymnastics and take all these other recreational classes. Either it’s Rhythmic or you stay in swimming, art, and all those other activities.”

So, from there, I had made up my mind to stay with Rhythmic and gave up everything else. That was the first time I’d fallen in love with something.

Aliya training for her next competition.

3. When training, how many hours a week, on average, did you participate in rhythmic gymnastics?

On average we would train about 25 hours a week. During competitive season, we would train anywhere from 4 to sometimes 7-8 hours a day. Usually these hours were broken up, but sometimes they were all in one big chunk, which could be grueling!  National Team camps and international training sessions were the most intense, but they were also an honor to be a part of, and extremely rewarding.

4.  Describe your daily life as a professional athlete.

My professional training really picked up in my teen years, after I had made the National Team at the age of 16.

My daily life became: wake up, go to first practice in the morning, come home to study/finish my homework, squeeze in a quick nap if time allowed, and then I would be off to a second evening practice. I would usually get home around nine, have dinner, study some more, go to bed, and then be ready to do the same thing the next day.

5. What ‘life tools’ do you feel rhythmic gymnastics has taught you that you may not have gotten anywhere else?

Towards the end of my career, I really learned to not care what other people thought of me. At first, it was extremely intimidating when I started to compete on the world stage, with such amazing gymnasts. I felt very insecure, like I didn’t totally belong. But, as time went on I just came to this realization that none of it mattered, I didn’t need validation anymore because I understood that I was “enough” the way I was.

It also taught me the importance of being passionate about something. Life isn’t perfect, and things don’t always happen the way you want them to, but it’s all irrelevant if you’re passionate about what you do. Passion is the force that keeps you moving forward, no matter what life throws at you!

6. What was your single greatest achievement in rhythmic gymnastics?

There were some really amazing moments, but the single greatest was in 2016. I was Senior All-Around Champion at Pacific Rim, winning 5 gold medals! I was happy because, in that competition, I was totally in the zone, and I had so much fun performing. It made the event all the more special!

7. What was the hardest move to master in rhythmic gymnastics? How did you feel when you accomplished it?

There were sooooo many, haha! I cant really single one out, but the feeling of mastering a trick or a move is exhilarating. It’s that moment that everything clicks and falls into place, and just creates this amazing mix of joy, relief, and excitement!

8. Were there any role models that inspired you?

Omg Yes! I looked up to so many beautiful gymnasts that I still admire even today. There was the beautiful Anna Bessonova from Ukraine, Irina Tchachina and Evgenia Kanaeva from Russia, and Liubov Charkashyna from Belarus! They were the reasons I pushed and trained so hard because I wanted to be on the world stage like them!

9. It’s no secret that rhythmic gymnastics is an extremely physical sport. What were some of the things that you did to upkeep your fitness?

Aliya’s digitals taken by Nous Model Management.

A lot of what we did revolved around stretching, technique, strengthening, and diet. We stretched everyday to stay flexible and keep muscles lean. We did many hours of ballet for technique, and strengthening exercises to keep strong and maintain proper form. We also had to maintain a very healthy diet and very little body fat, to ensure we could jump high and maintain speed throughout our performances.

10. On any given day, what would have been the top reason that may have deterred you from practicing?

Pretty much being sick with the flu and not being able to remove my body from my bed!!!

11. What was (or is) your favorite song to work out to?

I had two! One was “Lean On” by Major Lazer! That was my workout & pre-performance jam, I listened to that song before going into the gym! The other one was “The Fire”  by the Roots, that song I also listened to religiously while warming up before a competition!

12. What inspired you to transition into modeling?

Aliya modeling for Lululemon.

Being in rhythmic, I felt very connected to the arts. It incorporated the art of movement, expression, grace, music (considering we performed to songs that came from various musical categories) —we even had beautiful ornate costumes! So to me, the idea of modeling, and the idea of being a part fashion seemed like a perfect fit. I saw modeling as being a part of another world of art, and I felt that would be the best transition for me.

13. Thus far, have you had the opportunity work with any athletic brands since joining Nous? What was it like to work with these brands?

Yes I have! I have booked quite a few jobs with Lululemon, which has been such a fun experience!! It was exciting for me having the opportunity to model clothing that my teammates and I used to train in, as well as being able to showcase some of my skills for the brand!

14. Is there anything that rhythmic gymnastics and modeling have in common?

Actually yes, in both areas I find that the way of telling a story is very much the same. You cant speak in either modeling or when performing in Rhythmic, so you have to really rely on your facial expression and body movements to really communicate and express yourself.

Aliya’s digitals taken by Nous Model Management.

15. Do you still participate in rhythmic gymnastics on occasions for fun?

Not as much. My main focus now is modeling, but I still will get out my equipment every now and then and play around a bit, and still work on maintaining my flexibility.

16. Do you feel that having a background in Rhythmic Gymnastics has helped transition you into the modeling world? In what way?

Absolutely!

Rhythmic really gave me some tough skin, and I think that has helped me so much in pursuing modeling. It has given me that “I don’t quit” mindset, and even when things don’t go smoothly, there is this resilience that my former athletic mind has instilled in me. It has also given me a great understanding of my body and how it moves, which I feel is essential for modeling as well. I feel that this aspect makes me different, and that I can bring something different to the table besides just a pretty face. It has also served me very well in the aspect of discipline, and hard work. At the end of it all, nobody cared if you were tired or things were hard, the only thing they remembered was if you did your job, and did it well.

Aliya is all smiles as she accepts her award.

She’s so Nous! Meet Margo ~

Photographed by Wes Klain.

Name?

Margo Smith.

Where are you from?:

Mobile, Alabama.

What’s your guilty pleasure?:

Nutella, or anything involving Nutella. When I was a kid, I would eat half a jar by the spoonful in one sitting, so my parents started buying me one jar a month and I had to make it last. It was a rough childhood.

Who is your role model, and why?:

Cindy Crawford. Her accomplishments in the modeling industry and business world are insane. Not to mention, we have the same birthday and “beauty marks” on our lips, so she’s basically my mom (I WISH, Kaia is living the dream). Her hairdresser did my hair once and I’ve never felt so starstruck in my life.

Photographed by Wes Klain.

Favorite movie or TV show soundtrack?:

The Interstellar soundtrack. I could listen to it on repeat for hours and hours and hours…and hours.

What is your dream pet?:

A tiger. Lorde really inspired me when she sang about tigers on a gold leash, but since that’ll never happen, I hope to someday get a horse. But a girl can dream.

Whose fictional wardrobe do you want the most?:

I will take ANYTHING out of the wardrobe’s of Blair Waldorf or Serena Van Der Woodsen.

They go first, and they’re the only ones that go. Sour gummy worms are my favorite candy and once the blue and red ones are gone the whole bag is discarded.

Who was your childhood crush?:

All of the Jonas Brothers held a special place in my heart but Joe Jonas definitely takes the cake.

Where would you take your dream vacation?:

Between the food, the shopping, and the sights, I’m convinced Paris is the most magical place on Earth. Vacationing there is a must.

Do you have any mottos you live by?:

“Fall seven times, stand up eight.”

Since she was signed to Nous Model Management in 2017, we as company, have been in awe of Tori Bass’ natural skills when it comes to makeup art. In light of her recent beauty shoots (her role in the newest KKW Beauty campaign & Beth Sternbaum’s masterful creations), we thought it was only fit to get the details on her typical beauty routine. Tori Bass’ passion for makeup artistry is something that we deeply admire, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to try out all the products that she has recommended. To see what her routine is, take a glance below:

What do you love about makeup?

I love that makeup is so personal, and that there is no wrong way to do it. Whether you like the barely there look or want to be completely caked up, you can cater it to your mood. Plus, I always love seeing the way someone’s face lights up when they love their makeup. It only takes a little to boost your confidence sometimes.

What is your favorite era of makeup?

The 60’s is hands down my favorite era for makeup. It was bold, fashion forward, and always made a statement. Models and muses like Twiggy and Edie Sedgwick embodied it beautifully, but Priscilla Presley’s wedding makeup is my favorite look of all time.

Elvis Presley and his beautifully ‘done-up’ bride, Priscilla, on their iconic wedding day in 1967.

Do you have a favorite place to shop for makeup?

Sephora will always be my favorite! I’ve shopped there since I was very young, and worked in the Beverly Hills location before I began modeling so it will always have a place in my heart.

Is there any kind of makeup that you can’t leave the house without?

My lip gloss! I like having a bare face, but need my Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb or I feel incomplete.

What is your daily skincare routine? (step by step)

I’ve learned that for sensitive skin, keeping things as simple as possible is what works the best. I use my Clarisonic Face Brush with the First Aid Beauty Cleanser, and follow up with their Ultra Repair Cream after. That’s it for every day! Once or twice a week I’ll use the Aztec Clay Mask all over to detox my skin if it’s been through at lot. It works great as an overnight spot treatment for any zits as well. No more toothpaste on your face ladies!

What is your go-to natural look? What products do you use?

The natural look has been my favorite the past few months. I start by evening my skin with a tiny drop of the Naked Skin Foundation, buffing it in until it’s one with my skin.

After, I spot conceal anything that wasn’t covered before with the Kat Von D Lock It concealer, as it’s very high coverage. To keep in all in place, I set it with a light layer of the Fenty Beauty Translucent Blotting Powder.

Then to add a natural glow, I use Cover FX’s Click Highlighter in Gilded to the high points of my face. It’s cream, but blends on top of powder without a problem.

For brows, I like NYX Brow Pencil, and for mascara nothing beats Urban Decay’s Perversion. I’ve used it for years! Lastly, I add the Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb and I’m ready to go! It may sound like a lot, but it only takes about 10 mins tops so it’s great for everyday.

What is your go-to “night out” look? What products do you use?

For night, I basically use the same products, but aim for a little bit more coverage and longevity by layering to make sure nothing moves. Adding an extra drop of foundation and setting spray (nothing can top the Urban Decay All Nighter) is perfect for that.

Also, I like to use the Eve Pearl Blush Trio and Vapour Beauty Solar Transparent Bronzer in “Spicy” together to add some color and definition to my cheeks. The “Spicy” shade is great because it works on very light skin tones to deeper ones such as mine.

For lips, my current favorite is the “Walk of Shame” Matte Lipstick by Charlotte Tilbury because it goes with any look. If I’m feeling bolder, Urban Decay’s “Bad Blood” Matte Lipstick is super flattering.

What is your favorite drugstore brand?

My favorite drugstore brand is definitely NYX! I’ve found that they have dupes for so many different high end products, and many times they perform better for less than half the price. They’ve got a huge selection too so lots of options to choose from.

Tori (top left) modeling for KKW Beauty.

What cosmetics brand are you excited to try, but haven’t yet?

I’ve wanted to try Illamasqua for years but haven’t. It’s not as easy to find in the US but after years of watching British YouTubers praise the quality, I’ve wanted to try it for myself.

What is your most cherished beauty product?

My most cherished beauty product is the Urban Decay Perversion Mascara. My natural lashes are on the thinner, smaller side and it’s the only mascara to really wow me and make them look as big as I’d like them too. I’ve even had a few people ask me if I’m wearing falsies when I wear it.

Is there anything about the product(s) that you use that make them unique to others in their market?

On unique thing is that all of my products are cruelty free. It’s easier on my conscious to buy products where I know no living thing had to suffer in the process. I encourage everyone to explore as many cruelty free options that they can!

What celebrity and/or figure in your life inspires your makeup look?

Rihanna! I don’t think she’s ever had a bad makeup day. Her face is never caked, and she the way her artists give her a glow is mesmerizing. She’s a great example of how to enhance what is already beautiful on someone’s face.

Tori modeling for KKW Beauty.

Is there anything else that you would like to include?

I know that makeup can be a bit daunting to those who aren’t as knowledgeable about products but it can be a really cool hobby to explore. Don’t be too intimated and visit your local Sephora where they are more than happy to personalize different makeup products to you and your lifestyle!

Sleep, sleep, and more sleep.

Buying Boom-Chicka-Pop popcorn in bulk on Amazon, so I don’t run out.

Toni Braxton- You’re Making Me High.

Which emoji would capture your essence?

Definitely the alien emoji. I’m a total weirdo.

She’s so Nous! Meet Chandler ~

Name?:

Chandler Bailey.

How old are you?:

21 years of fun.

Where are you from?:

Nashville, TN.,

(otherwise known as the Greatest Place on Earth.)

If you had to choose one thing you were most passionate about, what would it be and why?

I am deeply passionate about animal rights. I volunteer at a shelter in Culver City called Michelson Found Animals, where they save stray dogs and cats from what can be described as “death row” at various kill shelters in Los Angeles. I’ve always been fond of animals but after working so intimately in this little community, nursing sick baby kittens and pups back to health and getting them ready for adoption has brought me indescribable and immeasurable joy. Adopt, don’t shop! 😉

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Wait… I have to pick one? It’s a tie between popcorn, an Impossible burger from Umami, or binge watching The Office. But I’m not guilty about any of those.

What is the most important memory you have and why?

One of the best memories I have comes from back home in Nashville, when I was around 10 years old. We lived right by a huge open field and in the middle of the night one summer, my mom woke me and ran me outside in my PJ’s. What I saw was absolutely unbelievable- What seemed like an endless ocean of fireflies, that stretched as far and wide as our eyes could see, flying around in perfect harmony, canopied by the brightest, clearest starry night you ever did witness.

We spent an hour sitting on the sidewalk in the tiny hours of the morning, while my mother showed me constellations and we just admired the beauty around us. This memory comes to mind when I start to feel trapped or overwhelmed. It brings me back home and makes me feel good, knowing that view is waiting for me each summer I visit Tennessee.

Where would you take your dream vacation?

I’ve been lucky enough to visit some insanely amazing places like Italy, Bali, and Iceland. To be honest, I really just want to go to Hawaii… Everyone I know has been except for me. What’s up with that?

Have you overcome one of your fears?

YES! I recently shot a commercial for a helicopter company called Blade. As someone who has always been deathly afraid of flying (I picked a great gig,  huh?), I had to play it cool on set. Set being, of course, a helicopter taking off from the Santa Monica Airport and flying to Palm Springs for the day. Concealing my terror while being on camera was quite challenging at first, until I realized flying in a helicopter is some of the most fun you can POSSIBLY have. I dare say it was one of the best experiences of my life. I’ll travel by helicopter over plane any day of the week.

What’s the most embarrassing trend that you gave into?

So… you know Crocs? Somewhere in my mother’s attic, hidden away so as not to burn anyone’s eyes of out their heads, lies a photo of a 12-year-old Chandler. Not wearing Crocs, but a bubblegum pink, fur-lined off-brand variation called none other than… Aqua Ducks. Typing this made me sad.

What are you most proud of?

I am truly proud of myself for how hard I worked to get to where I am in my career. I knew I wanted to do this from a very young age. I didn’t listen to anybody who told me I couldn’t do it or wouldn’t make it. I worked my booty off growing up to save enough money so I could move out here and make a career for myself, completely on my own. I have done just that and I couldn’t be more excited and grateful that it worked out.

What makes you feel nostalgic?

Johnny Cash. Humid summer days. Freshly cut watermelon.  I also have about a million photos of my mother and 6-year-old brother on my phone, which whenever I scroll through, obviously, I shed a tear or two.

What is your dream pet? (It doesn’t have to be traditional!)

Piles of puppies and kittens. Hopefully this won’t remain just a dream.

Do you have any mottos you live by?

There is a prayer that I was required to recite in school every day, that never felt significant to me until recently. Whenever I feel stressed, confused, or sad, this prayer calms me down.

“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

She’s so Nous! Meet Courtney ~

Name?:

Courtney Kitt

Where are you from?:

I was born in Canada, raised in Mexico.

What inspires you the most?:

I am inspired by people who are true to themselves, those who honour and love themselves. When you acknowledge the potential you have to be the best you that you can be, you shine that much brighter. It is this inspiration that has helped made me stay true to me.

What’s been you greatest achievement (so far)?:

Following my dreams. I worked my butt off building my book so I could apply for a work visa to come to LA. Getting signed to NOUS, A LOT of paper work, saving money and dedicating myself to a healthy lifestyle have all led this achievement. More than anything, I had to keep my eye on the prize, be patient and persevere. Making a permanent move to a new country is a big deal, and I did it!

If you had to choose one thing you were most passionate about, what would it be and why?:

Honestly, I am most passionate about work. I LOVE being a model. This career has allowed me to meet and work with the coolest people, travel to different places and keeps me motivated. It has taught me to honour myself and live my life by design, fully engaging in each experience and excited for each new day..and each new office of the day!

What’s under your bed?:

Well, I just moved into a furnished apartment. I absolutely HAD to de clutter the space and hide everything…Under my bed!!! If you look under there, you’ll find all types of things from place mats, to ugly cushions, drapes and a god awful rug.

What food will you absolutely not, under any circumstances, eat?:

Meat! I have been plant based for almost three years. This is hands down one of the best decisions I have ever made for myself. I can’t imagine eating any other way.

What is the most important memory you have and why?:

Moving to Mexico when I was eleven. We packed our lives up in Canada, got into the car,  and drove down to the paradise that I call home. I’ll never forget that drive across two countries. I was squished between all of our belongings in the back seat for the entire journey, filled with anticipation and excitement. The rest is history!

If you needed one, what would your DJ name be?:

Funny you ask! Be on the look out for DJ Kitt.. music is something I am pursuing.

What are you most proud of?:

I’m most proud of having had the opportunity to grow up bi-culturally. Along the way, the gift of a second language is now mine. Being the new kid in a new country wasn’t always easy, and it took some time for me to gain the confidence to actually speak Spanish. Now, I realize what a gift it is and I honestly get a kick out of peoples reactions when I speak Spanish here in California.

How would your best friend describe you?:

I like this question a lot, so I actually reached out to my best friend and asked. She said, on one hand I am kind, compassionate and very spiritual. But, look out cause I am also fierce, determined, and never give up!!

Who is your role model, and why?:

My mom. She taught me to live a life outside the box and is most definitely one of the most hardest working people I know.

She’s so Nous! Meet Haley ~

Name?:

Haley Collins

Where are you from?:

Southern California- Born and raised!

What’s been your greatest achievement so far?:

I’d have to say beating Cancer not only once, but twice is my greatest achievement to date! I was diagnosed in High School and again when I was 19. Although I had to go through 6 months of intense Chemotherapy and lost all my long blonde hair, I would never change the experience I went through. Getting up every morning and choosing to live a life filled with love and positivity despite battling a life-threatening illness, taught me I have the power within myself to concur any challenge life throws my way. Today, I am not only 4 years Cancer free, but I am a bad-ass warrior that plans on using the lessons I have learned and the strength I have gained to make the world a better place!

What’s the most embarrassing trend you gave into?:

Parachute pants. 7th grade. We don’t speak of that time in my life.

Whose fictional wardrobe do you want the most?:

I would say it’s a tie between Margot Tanenbaum from The Royal Tanenbaum’s and Penny Lane from Almost Famous! I love that both women have an unapologetic style that goes against convention. I love the 70s vibes of both ensembles and the bold statement pieces. And Penny Lane’s shag coat? I mean talk about iconic!

Which superpower would you want to have?:

I would love to be able to heal people with water bending- like Katara from Avatar the Last Air Bender (Nerd alert!). Being a Pisces I have a strong connection with water and I can’t imagine a power more meaningful than being able to heal those in need.

What would your DJ name be?:

HALEY BALLINZ!

Have you overcome on of your fears?:

I try to do one thing every day that scares me but my most recent fear I have

faced is my crippling (and I mean crippling) fear of heights. I recently got into Rock Climbing and I have been forced to face my fears head on. There’s no feeling more rewarding than looking at a wall and thinking “there’s no way I can climb this thing” and then conquering it!

If you were an animated character who would you be and why?:

I would totally be Eliza Thornberry from The Wild Thornberry’s! She has a monkey as a best friend, and I have a pet pig named Penelope who is my best pal. Not to mention, I have always secretly wished I could talk to animals.

Do you have any mottos you live by?:

I am obsessed with quotes, but a few of my favorites are:

“Be Here Now.”

“To thine own self be true.”

“Keep it simple.”

Where would you take your dream vacation?:

I would love to travel anywhere tropical! I love warm weather and water so somewhere like Costa Rica or Bali would be amazing. I can totally picture myself living in a Yurt on the beach watching the sunset with a Pina Colada in my hand!

What inspires you the most?:

Selfless acts of loving compassion inspire me. When I was 7 years old, I remember seeing a woman give the coat off her back to a homeless man on the street. I think about the impact this simple act of kindness must have had on that man’s life. We all have the power to make the world a better place and I try to infuse the world with as much love as I can every day.

She’s so Nous! Meet, Georgia ~

Name?:

Georgia Grace Martin.

Where are you from?:

I’m from London.

Where is the most beautiful place on earth and why?:

The most beautiful place on Earth (for me) has to be Australia. I’m in love with the Australian lifestyle and i’ve spent many months there. Every time, I can’t believe how beautiful all the beaches are – I can’t even name my favourite beach! Every morning, I would make sure that I would watch the sunrise on Bondi Beach to start my day. If you haven’t been before, you must!

What’s your favorite weekend activity?:

Hmmm, to be honest, I love to spend every Saturday and Sunday morning doing a long yoga class to start. Then, I go for an açai bowl (still haven’t found the best place in LA) and then after I see friends while going to the markets  (shopping). I like to completely chill at the weekend to rest. During Sunday evenings, I always like to go to the movies. It’s my favourite.

Which superpower would you want to have?:

Has to be to stop time – there was a childhood tv program I used to watch called, “Bernard Watch,” where he had a stopwatch to stop time and people. He had the whole world to himself when he wanted – that would be my dream… life goes to quick!

Do you have any mottos you live by?:

Live everyday – don’t worry about the small things – appreciate everything you have – don’t give up when times are hard – always reach your goals – everything does happen for a reason.

What’s your guilty pleasure?:

Has to be food (of course). I lived for two years in Paris: Almond croissant with chocolate (every now and then).  Oulala!

What’s under your bed?:

SHOES – Well, boxes of shoes. My weakness is shoes. I buy and forget what I have under my bed!!!  (always)

If you needed one, what would your DJ name be?:

If I could have a DJ name ahaha..  I actually spoke about this on a job in Australia and it came together.

DJ Name = GDOG OR GBOMB!!!

What is the most important memory you have and why?:

I have a few. The 1st one that comes to my head was in Africa. I went to Africa last January and watched the migration of animals cross the boarder. It was the most magical thing that I’ve ever seen. Also being able to see the last White Rhino in flesh. No words! Magic!

Where would you take your dream vacation?:

I’m not really a person who likes to sit by the pool and chill. I love to see things as i’m a little tourist, seeing places I’ve never seen. So, I probably won’t travel in just one place. I would love to go to India and travel all around India – it’s my dream. Bucket list this year!

What is your favorite era of music and why?:

90s Hip hop all day everyday!! It isn’t the same nowadays!
