Summer

Last week something super exciting happened: We had our first in-house casting in the Nous Fashion Den with our dear friends at Swell! As California girls, we can’t get enough of their huge selection of clothing and accessories for a surf-oriented lifestyle. I mean, we don’t actually surf or anything, but that doesn’t stop us from heading to Swell whenever we need to up our beach-attire game!  Plus, they update their collection daily, which is an absolute must for true shop-aholics like us.

Part of the functionality of our new space is to be able to provide next-level services for our beloved clients, including in-house photoshoots and castings.  Nous Fashion Den castings in particular are designed to be both a convenient and luxe experience for our clients.

As you can see here, the process begins with all of the girls gathered in our open call area.

Girls

One by one, they head into the next room for some one-on-one time with the client. In this case, the lovely Dana Wimberly from Swell‘s core team was there to greet the girls and get to know them a little better.  Dana sat casually on our pretty little couch (complete with sparkly authentic Moroccan textiles that we just can’t get enough of) and interviewed each girl.  From the same seat, she also had an unobstructed view of the studio area, so she could watch the girls model after speaking with them. Our Art Department Director and in-house photographer Ashley was right there to have the girls do a mock-ecomm shoot so that Dana could sit back, relax, and watch them do their thing. Fabulous!

Casting in progress

When building the studio space, we brought in the expert opinion of one of our favorite photographers, Ed McGowan, to help us get the lighting just right.  He did a fantastic job, look at how perfect these casting photos of the girls come out!  Of course, for ultra-convenience, we made sure to give Dana a thumb drive with all of the images to take with her back to Swell HQ.

A brand inspired by L.A. lifestyle, Brandy Melville gained its fame among Hollywood celebrities, including The Kardashians, Ashley Benson, Audrina Patridge, Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Miley Cyrus, Karlie Kloss and many others.

The ‘Brandy Girl’ is the definition of classic character standing out in the crowd, she is refined and fashionable yet relaxed. The typical Brandy Girl is feminine with an urban twist, young at heart, active, tough, stylish, and chic in an effortless way.

Nous model Naty Belmont has been a tried-and-true Brandy Girl since she first signed with Nous Models. It’s an opportunity that millions of girls would dream of getting. We asked Naty to tell us a bit more about being a Brandy girl.

“The first time I ever worked with Brandy Melville was May of 2013. It wasn’t just my first time working with Brandy but my first time ever working as a model just in general- so I was very nervous to say the least! The whole team was so sweet and easy to get along with, I remember not ever wanting to leave. Being 14 at the time they all treated me like their little sister. The team at BM is like one big happy family.

Now that it’s been a year and a half I can definitely say it’s just like hanging out with family on set. We get so much work accomplished but we have such a fun time doing it. I don’t only get to work with a dream team, but I also get to represent such an amazing brand!!”

“The thing I love most about being a Brandy Girl is the opportunity to be a role model to younger girls; it’s always so crazy hearing from girls saying they look up to me. This brand is known, worn and loved by girls like me from all around the world and being able to represent them and their style is such a huge blessing. It honestly still blows my mind thinking about it.

My room is totally filled with Brandy Melville clothes. The collection is comfy, soft, practical and of course SO cute. I love wearing BM clothes in my everyday life. My older sister and Mom wear it too, so I know I’ll be able to keep Brandy as a part of my wardrobe for a long time to come.”

Summer may technically be ending, but that doesn’t mean that we’re tired of looking at beach photo shoots. I mean, this is California after all! We’re all about the sandy feet and salty hair. Davia (@davia_gomez) gave us an inside perspective of her shoot with German photographer, Max Motel (@maxmotel). Read all about what really went into getting these gorgeous photos below.

“3 o’clock in the afternoon I was struggling to find parking in a dirt lot at El Matador State Beach. Finally I see a tiny spot and decide to try to squeeze in my car, and to my luck that is how I met Max. He was in the car I was going to box in (oops)! A friendly guy with an accent came out of his car and said, “You must be Davia”. Right off the bat there was great energy between us. After that he helped me squeeze my car in the spot and we were ready to get shooting! I opened my trunk and we rummaged through the suitcase of clothes I had brought to the shoot. After picking what we agreed to be our favorite looks we headed down the dirt trail to the beach. You couldn’t pick a more beautiful walk looking down at clear water, white sand, and feeling a refreshing breeze.

As we approached the beach we had noticed the tide had gotten high so we had no choice but to jump in the water and start shooting right away. Shooting in the water was full of laughs as neither of us had been there or knew the extent to how rocky it was, I’m positive I couldn’t count how many times each of us tripped! Max was incredible to shoot with, super easy going and fun. It felt less like being at a shoot and more just like being at the beach with a friend. He used a disposable underwater camera with which we took candid shots playing in the waves, laughing, and splashing around the water.

Disposable

After playing in the water a bit, the tide came up too high and we had to relocate. We found a high rock that rose above the tide and climbed it. Up there it was a little chilly as the wind picked up and the sun started to set. Lucky for me I was with a nice photographer who let me shoot with a towel wrapped around me until the sun was perfect!

Around 7 the sun had almost set, making a pink glow in the sky. So we decided for our last hour to hop back in the water and catch the light. When it all faded we walked back to our cars. I had such a fun day but how could I have not because when you live in California! Nothing beats being in the ocean, and when you’re modeling nothing beats working with a great photographer.”

Here are some of the images Davia and Max captured from their Malibu rendez-vous!

Photographer Maximilian Motel is currently based in Berlin, but tries to spend as much time as possible in Los Angeles- which he fell in love with a couple of years ago. His work consists largely of portraiture, ranging from street portraits taken in LA and NYC to fashion portraits.

Playing in the sun like a meadow fairy, Alex Long (@allotree) glows in this editorial shot exclusively for Nouszine by photographer Steve Fan (@stevefanfotos).

Shot on a perfectly sunny day in Malibu, California, Alex and Steve had endless space to play. There was no one around, and they got to spend hours getting the sunlight to shine through her hair just right.

We spoke to Alex for a little behind the scenes on the shoot:

Nous: How much planning went into this shoot?

AlexThis shoot was really easy for me to get ready for. Because it was outside, I knew it would be pretty low maintenance for my hair and make up. I spent a couple hours going through my closet  making sure I had enough options. My entire trunk was full of clothes, so I probably over did it!

N: Are there any problems that come up when you shoot in nature?

AThe bugs. That’s it. I can handle almost anything else but the bugs, no. Other than that, I love shooting in nature! I feel very comfortable and connected when I’m outside so getting “in the mood” isn’t hard.

N: How was it shooting with Steve?

ASteve is awesome to work with. He is very down-to-earth and low maintenance. He gave great direction that really complimented the location and was able to capture these perfect moments.

Perfection, indeed. Check out the rest of the editorial below!
