How’d you start modeling?

I was an actress, new to LA, and was looking for fun work. So, I went to an open call… here I am.

Who/ what are your biggest inspirations?

Frida Khalo, Tempest Storm and the lovely Mother Earth.

Favorite modeling experience, so far & why?

Working for Clinique with JUCO was a favorite. Beauty modeling is more my zone.

Tell us some of your modeling goals. Any particular brands you’d love to model for?

I am looking to interweave my love for modeling, whacking and vogueing for a major brand. I love Milk Makeup, Adidas, & Gucci Resort.

Describe your personal style. How do you typically dress on your days off?

I always gravitate to clothes I can move in easily. Personally, I love costume pieces, pastels and feminine fits with a boyish appeal.

What’s your favorite fashion trend of the moment?

Not big on trends, but I think anyone in the world can rock a choker.

What are some of your favorite beauty products?

Glossier is great all around. I also love Mario Badescu Rose Facial Spray and Moroccanoil for all hair care needs.

We know you’ve gotta take care of your figure, but what’s your favorite “cheat meal”?

My cheat meal is vegan chicken strips served on the UCLA campus after 9pm. It’s always a little challenge, but oh so worth it.

What are you listening to at the moment?

I’ve been listening to Wanda Jackson, The Buttertones and always the Bee Gees.

Favorite TV show/ movie?

Don’t have favorites, but I love The Eric Andre Show. Also a Czech movie I recently discovered, called To The Stars By Hard Ways; very intimate and ethereal.

What’s your biggest pet peeve & why?

Inconsideration… people need to care about others’ well being more.

Something you love to do in your spare time?

I love dancing and conceptualizing grand performances in my garden.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

I was my school’s mascot, the K.O. cougar.

What valuable lessons have you learned from the industry, thus far? Any advice for other aspiring models?

It is far more attractive to have an inner beauty about yourself that compliments your outer appearance. Most of the time, you don’t know what a client is looking for (sometimes, they don’t even know, themselves) so just be the maximum you and your chances are better than if you embrace someone else.

Gearing up for the weekend? Kick-start your Friday night with the latest arrivals from Clinique featuring Sydney and Monica. Clinique is pretty much our favorite go-to brand for the highest quality makeup and skincare, so we couldn’t be more proud of these beautiful ladies for being chosen to represent them!

Sydney has us swooning over her perfect dewy complexion, stunning as an exotic vintage beauty with kohl-lined eyes and the perfect red lip for one look, with flirty pink accents to smoky taupe eyes in a second more natural option. Monica, on the other hand, is making a strong impression for minimalism sporting menswear and the new Pep Start Eye Cream, creating a beautiful contrast with the vivid wash of color she wears as a modern-day flower child for her second look to promote the Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm.

Warning: Viewing WILL make you want to try out these products for yourself, so head to Clinique, bag some goodies, and thank us later!

Beauty. It’s so much more than just a pretty face, especially when it comes to the world of beauty photography! Part portrait, part fashion editorial- it’s an extremely difficult niche to master as a photographer. Not only do you have to have superior retouching skills and a keen eye for detail and editing, but you also need to have a killer makeup artist and a powerful connection with the model. A great beauty shot is something truly striking.

Jenn Collins and her arsenal of insanely talented MUAs have got all of the elements of a perfect beauty image down to a science. Time after time, Jenn and her team have demonstrated that they are some of the best artists in their field.  Here are some of the highlights of their best work with Nous Models:

Gone are the lazy days of summer. Let’s just take a second to morn that loss.

And we’re back.

Anyway, as ironic as it might sound, back to school is actually one of our favorite times of year. Fresh binders and pencils, a new football season, and your prized I-did-not-wake-up-like-this-I-planned-three-weeks-for-this first day of school outfit, they’re all things that we’re looking forward to. That first day back, the hallways might as well be a red carpet. Who’s new friends with who, who’s wearing what, and how so-and-so managed to transform into a totally different person in just a couple of months; these are all important discoveries made on that very first day. So now is your chance to make a statement about who you were, who you are and who you’re becoming. No pressure or anything, but it’s a look that will set the tone for your entire year. So what are you going to do?

At Nous, we’re trend setters, not followers; so you won’t find us frantically swiping through glossy magazine pages trying to spot and copy the newest fad. This year, let’s do something a little more exciting, and bring back a time when school actually felt kind of cool, and the rebel chicks strutted around campus like they just couldn’t be bothered. The 70’s were the ultimate years of the rocker-chic look, which is why we’re literally living and dying for these retro looks from Living Doll’s 1970’s inspired back to school collection. Stripes mixed with paisley, flared silhouettes, leather accessorized with fur, random graphic tees and of course anything FRINGE– no look is too bold when you’re channeling vintage vibes.

Our sartorial statement for this school year: We are tough, we are confident, and we don’t really care if you don’t approve. Want to join us?  Shop Living Doll and you’re already halfway there (just don’t forget to bring the swagger to back it up).

Being a model is hard work. Think about the last time you went shopping, how many outfits you tried on, and how tired you were at the end of the day. Now multiply that outfit number by ten, tack on a couple hours for hair and makeup, and imagine about a dozen people watching your every move the entire time. This, is a day in the life of a model #IRL.

When we saw Sydney’s lookbook for the iconic skate brand, Diamond Supply Co., complete with some pretty intense #BTS shots, we thought it was the perfect time to get some insight on the matter. The team shot at the beautiful Lobo Castle (yes, you read that right- CASTLE) in Agora Hills, and it was the brand’s first time shooting for Diamond Women, an extension of the previously all-menswear line. No pressure.

A model, actress and amateur-voguer, Sydney is no stranger to performing for a crowd. We asked her how she felt about being the center of attention on a shoot, having a whole team of people watch and critique her modeling. Is is stressful? Scary? Or dare we say.. fun?

Sydney in-store at DSCo

“Oh, I love it! It’s definitely a confidence booster and it pushes you to give the team what they want.”

Good. Point. The people watching, they’re not just innocent bystanders. There will be a photographer, photographer’s assistant, wardrobe stylist, hair stylist, makeup artist and a creative director at the very least, and every one of them has put hard work towards you doing a good job. Now it’s the model’s job to bring it all together and make the magic happen. Feeling the pressure yet?

Sydney handled all that pressure not only with a boat-load of confidence, but with style and humility too, nailing the #diamondlife style to a tee. Shot by photographer Mat Abad, the lookbook is, well, perfect. Take a look at some of our favorite images from the shoot:

Diamond Supply Co. was founded in 1998 when Nicholas Tershay (aka Nick Diamond) created a skateboarding hardware line from his humble one-bedroom apartment in San Francisco. In 2000, Nick moved to Los Angeles and began building Diamond Supply Co. in Mike Carroll & Rick Howard’s legendary Girl Skateboards distribution house – soon growing Diamond Supply Co. to a full range of skateboard hard and soft goods, including bolts, bearings, t-shirts, fleece, accessories and more. Having a strong design aesthetic, and a commitment for creating high quality goods, Diamond Supply Co. was quickly embraced by skate and street fashion communities alike.

You’re known pretty exclusively as Melis+Dainon; so you guys are some kind of a duo? What does that mean and how does that work?
Yes! We are partners in life and in business, and are often referred to as a “photography duo.” We share similar talents, and the other skills we have developed really complement each other, so we are a good team. We conceptualize shoots, work with clients, and select models and creative teams together. I (Melis) am the lead on photography, while Dainon is the lighting master. In post, Dainon is the primary retoucher, and I come in for the finishing touches. It’s a great balance!

What makes you different from your peers and competition?
Our photographic style is all about the search for authenticity. We take photos that are true to life and capture the best and most unique attributes of the model, design, and environment. Rather than adding stylistic signatures to the photos that identify them as ours, we preserve the integrity of the content through straightforward execution that is unfiltered and impactful.

We also took a very different path to photography than most. I earned my Master’s in Business Administration and worked as a Marketing Director, and Dainon earned his law degree and worked as an Executive Director prior to opening Melis+Dainon. Our non-traditional journey provides us with a unique understanding of the challenges that business owners face in developing their brands, as well as the ability to resolve these challenges through an integrated brand marketing and photography approach.

_Sydney-Sakura_Nous_9268-1_FINAL_web

Do you have a specialty or area of focus?
We specialize in photography and branding for the fashion, beauty, and entertainment industries. Business owners and individuals in these industries are especially affected by image-based branding and depend on quality, impactful photography as a vehicle to communicate with their target customers. It’s a natural fit!

What drove you to expand the scope of your services?
The simple answer is that we realized there was a significant need for an integrated approach to branding, and we were uniquely positioned to provide a solution.

After we launched our photography business, we met a lot of designers, entrepreneurs, and individuals (e.g. models, actors, personalities) who would inevitably discuss their experiences – good and bad – with trying to build their brands. We could see how passionate they were and most had a really clear vision for their value, position, and business. However, in many cases, the brand that their target customers experienced did not fit at all with their vision. The customer-facing materials – like website images, POS displays, catalogs, ads, etc. – either were not very engaging, or worse, engaged the wrong audience entirely. It was frustrating to see brands that we really believe in suffer from miscommunication or lack of clarification between business teams and creatives. So, we decided to do something about it.

What kinds of things have you added?
We now offer services that span the entire marketing process – from concept to campaign. We help businesses, owners, and individuals (personal brands) to grow and develop at all stages – from start-ups to established companies who want to launch new product lines or refine existing plans.

An example of our full-service process may look like:
Introductory brand consulting and strategic planning
Website content creation and structure, on-page SEO, and web images
Social media content creation, strategy, and promotional images
Advertising strategy, planning, implementation, creative direction, and campaign images
Brand direction & consulting – oversee the work of brand contributors to make sure the brand integrity is maintained

What’s the advantage to that?
When we are able to support owners and teams through the various stages of the marketing process, they can feel confident that their needs are heard, understood, and translated into quality and effective strategies. There is no gap in communication because we are with them from start to finish and handle both their marketing and photography needs.

Melis_Dainon

#Goals; everybody’s got ’em. What are yours?
We love traveling and experiencing different cultures, so we aim to develop our business into a vehicle that we can use to explore the world. We already have clients in different countries and would like to continue to grow our network so we can work and live without roots. Shooting campaigns in beautiful, exotic locations with amazing talent, and helping to develop global brands would be the ultimate achievement.
